Overview

Does a motorcycle displaying only 62 horsepower on the speedometer still have the power to inspire in 2006? Yamaha answers with a resounding yes, with the Drag Star Classic, a cruiser that proves that raw power is not the only criterion for a successful ride. This large 1063 cm3 V-twin engine, taken from the Virago but with revised internal components, delivers generous torque of 85 Nm from 2500 rpm. We are far from the stratospheric figures of sportbikes, but the objective here is different: to provide a frank and linear surge as soon as you open the throttle, without seeking to wrench your arms. The result is a placid engine, which purrs with quiet authority and responds without haste when called upon. With a theoretical top speed of 170 km/h, it will not challenge a sport-touring machine, but it offers sufficient range for national roads.

Yamaha XVS 1100 A Drag Star Classic

What truly surprises on this Drag Star is its dynamic behavior. With a dry weight of 261 kg and a seat height of only 69 cm, it appears to be a pure, static custom. But Yamaha has worked on its chassis. The 41 mm telescopic fork and the mono-shock ensure notable comfort and, more importantly, handling that far exceeds the standards of the segment. You can trust it in corners, where many of its American competitors begin to groan. The braking system, with its two front discs and one rear disc, is effective and proportionate, even allowing for a bit of play if the terrain permits. It is a motorcycle that, despite its low-rider look, is not afraid to move.

But compromises must be made. The five-speed gearbox, especially in first gear, is not a model of silence and precision, sometimes recalling the old habits of custom transmissions. And if you are planning trips with a passenger, be prepared for comments: the rear seat is styled for aesthetics rather than functionality, a classic on this type of machine. The 17-liter tank, coupled with moderate fuel consumption thanks to the under-compression engine (8.3:1), offers correct, but not exceptional, range for long journeys.

Positioned at 9500 euros at the time, the Drag Star Classic presented itself as a credible and more agile alternative to traditional American cruisers. It targeted the rider seeking classic custom aesthetics – wide wheels, low lines, shaft drive – but without completely sacrificing driving pleasure. Compared to a Harley-Davidson of the time, it was often more affordable and easier to live with daily. It is a motorcycle for those who want a road presence, a deep sound and an attitude, without necessarily wanting to play adventurer on the highways. It remains true to the Star spirit of Yamaha: accessible, well-finished and always with a touch of Japanese fun in a segment that is often very serious.
