Overview
Who needs a face when you have character? In 2011, the KTM 990 Super Duke poses this question with an undeniable brutality. It’s not there to look pretty in a catalog, but to remind you that the word "naked" also means "uncovered," right down to mechanical aggression. Its chrome-molybdenum trellis frame, sharp optics, and this bulldog posture ready to pounce define a silhouette instantly recognizable. The modifications since the early 2005 or 2006 versions are subtle – a 18.5-liter fuel tank, a dashboard that is finally worthy of the name – but the essence remains intact: a provocation on two wheels.

Underneath this streetfighter suit, the 999 cm³ V2 engine speaks a direct language. With 122 horsepower released at 9000 rpm and 100 Nm of torque available at 7000, it doesn't seek sophistication, but impact. Compared to a Japanese V4 or a more rounded Italian twin, KTM’s LC8 has this ruggedness that makes the rider smile and mechanics wince. The transmission is a clear call to action, the chain final drive confirming a philosophy without filters. In terms of reliability, the engine of the KTM 990 Super Duke has proven its robustness over the years, but it requires regular attention, like any high-level athlete.
The chassis confirms this orientation. The 48 mm WP fork and WP monoshock ensure a frank dialogue with the ground, while the brakes, with their dual front discs and radial calipers, have the power necessary to contain the fury. The dry weight of 186 kg and a seat height of 850 mm give a feeling of immediate control, even if this high position can intimidate the less experienced. Sport tires, in 120 at the front and 180 at the rear, are chosen for precision, not for longevity. Everything here is optimized for reactivity, sometimes at the expense of long-distance comfort.
Facing its competitors, the 2011 990 Super Duke occupies a very particular niche. It’s not the most versatile, nor the most refined. It’s more comparable to the 2008 or 2009 R versions, or even more recent models like the 2020 990 Super Duke, embodying a raw purity that subsequent regulatory changes have since tempered. For €10,990 at the time, it offered a no-compromise experience, far from more accommodating naked bikes.
This machine is made for the rider who seeks a primitive connection with the road. It demands commitment, tolerates few mistakes, and rewards with frank sensations. The target audience? The sporty touring rider, the Sunday track day enthusiast, the one who considers a motorcycle as a tool for dialogue with physics, not as an accessory. The KTM 990 Super Duke, in its 2011, 2012, or even used versions today, remains a reminder that sometimes, in a world of standards, there still need to be objects that breathe freedom and excess.
