Overview
How do you fit a 1000 cm3 V2 into a street without attracting everyone's attention? With the 2006 KTM 990 Super Duke, that’s a question that doesn’t even arise. This motorcycle, in its signature orange livery, knows nothing of discretion. It is a burst of mechanical provocation, a challenge thrown down to conventions and other, more restrained naked bikes. Between a Buell XB12 and an MV Agusta Brutale, it always chooses radicality.

Beneath this exuberance lies a remarkable construction. The chrome-molybdenum frame is a lightweight and rigid structure, the starting point of a cohesive assembly. The WP suspension, with a 48 mm inverted fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear, is adjustable and offers a surprising compromise. It filters out imperfections without sacrificing precision too much, although it can feel a little harsh on violent impacts. The controls are adjustable, the brakes are effective, and the dashboard is typically KTM, with its analog tachometer and digital display, speaking directly to the rider. Everything is designed so that you only think about riding.
The heart of the machine, this 999 cm3 V2, is a true character. With 122 horsepower released at 9000 rpm and a torque of 100 Nm at 7000 rpm, it just wants to work. The sound of the short exhaust pipes is a constant reminder of its presence, a mechanical scent that permeates your clothes. Sequential injection facilitates starts, but real life begins beyond 4000 rpm. The six-speed gearbox is pleasant, even if its gearing is long, the first gear already propelling you well beyond the reasonable. At 135 km/h, the engine rotates peacefully at 4600 rpm, but the temptation to exploit the redline, marked at 9500 rpm, is permanent. The theoretical top speed of 230 km/h is just a formality for this athlete.
This KTM 990 Super Duke is a machine of bold compromises. Its weight, 184 kg dry, makes it agile, and the riding position, upright torso but tucked-in legs, is both comfortable and engaging. It proves to be more civilized in everyday use than one might believe, thanks in part to a progressive clutch and a relatively welcoming seat. But it retains its original flaws, which are part of its abrasive charm. Range is a known weak point, with a 15-liter tank that requires frequent stops. The center stand is sometimes difficult to find, and the horn is a polite suggestion compared to the engine's roar. The reliability of the KTM 990 Super Duke, on models of this generation, is generally good, but it requires an attentive owner, ready to maintain demanding mechanics.
This is not a motorcycle for everyone. It targets the rider who seeks a naked bike with a sporty temperament, a machine that refuses compromise. Compared to its more sensible contemporaries, it positions itself as a raw performance tool, a vehicle for transforming an ordinary road into an intense session. Today, searching for a used KTM 990 Super Duke R is a way to access this uncompromising philosophy. Later evolutions, up to the KTM 990 Super Duke 2024, have polished some aspects, but the 2006 version remains this raw reference, the one that defined the identity of the series. It pushes you to explore your limits, long before you even think about reaching the machine's limits.
