Overview
Ten units. That is the confidential production run of this 2020 Katana Icon, a limited edition that doesn't shy away from attention but doesn't overplay it either. Following last year's Yoshimura edition, more muscular in its positioning, Suzuki shifts register and looks to the American side for an unexpected collaboration with Icon, a brand specializing in motorcycle gear in the United States, known for its helmets and jackets with a deliberately off-beat style.

The visual result draws directly from Icon's Airflite Stim Black helmet, with that dark palette punctuated by flashes of green as a luminous hook. A nocturnal livery, almost corsair-like, far removed from the usual blue-white-silver color schemes that adorn Japanese supersports. To push the consistency all the way, each example comes delivered with the helmet in question. It's a thoughtful touch that matters when talking about a machine priced at €15,999, even if Suzuki offers a customer discount of €1,690 to soften the blow.
Beneath the bodywork sits the 999 cc inline four-cylinder engine, 152 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 107.9 Nm at 9,500 rpm, housed in an aluminum perimeter frame. Figures that remain in the middle ground of contemporary liter-class sportbikes — neither trailing behind nor leading the pack. The Katana was never a hardcore track machine. Its positioning is elsewhere, somewhere between an assumed motorcycle-sculpture and a lively roadster for riders who appreciate retro-futuristic lines without sacrificing their heart rate. For this Icon edition, an Akrapovic exhaust joins the standard specification, adding two horsepower and two additional Nm while shedding 1.1 kg from the powertrain. It's a premium touch, and it shifts the sound toward something more incisive.
The equipment is rounded out by an aluminum license plate bracket to slim down the rear, side sliders to protect the bodywork in the event of an urban tumble or tight parking, and a numbered plaque affixed to the 12-liter tank. This last detail is perhaps the most symbolic, because it transforms the motorcycle into a collector's object as much as a means of transportation. A numbering that takes on its full meaning with only ten machines in existence worldwide.
The profile of the ideal buyer here doesn't resemble someone chasing lap times on a circuit. It's more likely someone who already has a handle on the stated 214 kg wet weight, who accepts an 825 mm seat height and a 12-liter tank whose range demands planned stops, and who wants to ride differently from the GSX-Rs and CBR-RRs that populate fast roads. The Katana, in this format, is a style statement carried by a credible engine, limited in its distribution by a deliberately tiny production number. Not enough to shake up Suzuki's lineup sales, but sufficient to fuel conversation at any motorcycle gathering where the matte paint and green details will turn heads.
