Overview
Remembering the 2009 KTM 990 Super Duke is like diving back into an era when the word "compromise" didn't exist in the Mattighofen dictionary. There was no talk yet of invasive electronics or riding modes, but of raw character, a direct and sometimes violent connection with the asphalt. This 999 cm3 V2, spitting out 122 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque, wasn't a machine, it was a statement of intent on two wheels. The design, with its exposed trellis frame and aggressive posture, said it all: here, we have fun, but on our terms.

Beneath the brute appearance, the 2009 model had nevertheless accumulated some crucial developments compared to the first KTM 990 Super Duke models of 2005 or 2006. The fuel tank gained 4 liters, bringing the capacity to 18.5 L, a welcome breath of fresh air to prolong the pleasure without constantly watching for the next gas station. The dashboard finally left the era of spartan minimalism for a complete and readable instrumentation, a sign that KTM was beginning to listen to those who used the beast on a daily basis. And then there were the brakes, real 4-piston Brembo radial calipers biting down on 320 mm discs, a superbike-grade equipment that clearly announced the color: this naked bike was a disguised track bike.
However, it is important not to be mistaken. The search for stability via a slightly revised geometry and adaptation to Euro 3 standards have never dulled its edge. Mounting up at a height of 855 mm, feeling this vibrant engine explode after 7000 rpm, is experiencing a motorcycle that refuses compromise. Compared to a more refined Japanese bike of the time, the Super Duke demanded the rider, rewarding commitment with ferocious agility and raw sensations. It is this lack of a filter that forged its legend and explains why people are still searching today for a used KTM 990 Super Duke R with fervor.
So, who can claim to ride it today? Certainly not a beginner, who would be swallowed whole. It is the mount of the demanding globetrotter, the enthusiast of lively mechanics, the one who seeks a characterful alternative to sanitized offerings. The question of KTM 990 Super Duke reliability arises, as with any machine as intense, but it is the price to pay for such authenticity. Faced with the new KTM 990 Super Duke 2024 models, hyper-technological, the 2009 remains the archetype of the pure streetfighter, a salutary reminder that motorcycle pleasure sometimes comes with a bit of a hammer blow. It is not perfect, it is essential.
