Overview

Some machines enter history through the front door, while others prefer to slip in through a side window — in limited edition, reserved for a very specific market. The Suzuki Katana Jintachi 2019 belongs to this second category. Suzuki Italy decided to push the neo-retro concept one step further by invoking a little-known ancestor of the famous sword: the jintachi, a cavalry weapon, longer and more curved, often overshadowed by the glory of the katana that supplanted it at the end of the Koto era. Two blades reconciled on two wheels — that is the promise of this special series.

Suzuki 1000 Katana Jindachi

The mechanical foundation is anything but a museum piece. Beneath the sharp silhouette inherited from the Katana design that resurfaced in 2019, beats an inline four-cylinder of 999 cc derived from a previous generation GSX-R 1000. Bore of 73.4 mm, stroke of 59 mm, compression at 12.2:1, four valves per cylinder: this is pure sport repurposed as a roadster. The figures speak for themselves — 153 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 111.8 Nm available at 9,400 rpm. A high-revving character, then, that demands conviction at the wrist and a certain familiarity with sporting displacements. All of this for a wet weight of 214 kg, which remains reasonable in the category, with a seat height of 825 mm and a 12-liter tank that will remind hurried riders to take regular breaks on the motorway.

The Jintachi distinguishes itself from the standard Katana through a set of accessories designed to appeal to the rider who wants to stand out without going through the hassle of home customization. The most tangible element is the Akrapovic Slip-On titanium exhaust, reference S-S10SO15-HAPT, which sheds 1.1 kg from the machine while freeing up a few additional horsepower and newton-meters. The sound changes, the sonic identity strengthens. Visually, the wheels and fairing receive a series of coordinated stickers, the two-tone seat carries the embossed Katana logo, the tank and its flanks benefit from carbon-look protective covers, and a tinted screen replaces the standard item to provide a little extra aerodynamic protection. The choice comes down to two base colors, grey or black, with a selection of parts drawn from the official catalogue.

Facing a Yamaha MT-10 or a Honda CB1000R playing in the same neo-sport bracket between 14,000 and 16,000 euros, the Jintachi at 14,290 euros positions itself coherently. It does not offer the electronic versatility of an MT-10 SP nor the urban refinement of the Honda, but it sells an image, a strong graphic heritage and a proven mechanical package. This is not a machine for beginners: the power is there, the ergonomics are sporting, and the 153 horsepower leaves no room for imprecision. The aluminum perimeter frame, the 43 mm inverted fork with 120 mm of travel, and the radially mounted Brembo four-piston calipers on 310 mm discs compose a precise and reassuring front end for experienced riders who know how to exploit it.

The main criticism one can level concerns geographic availability. Reserved for the Italian market at launch, this special series leaves enthusiasts in other countries on the sidelines, with a sense of injustice that local importers will need to decide whether to address or not. Suzuki made a genuine pricing effort for Italy; it remains to be seen whether the commercial logic will cross borders. For the rider who loves motorcycles with character — a recognizable visual signature and an engine that sings just beyond 9,000 rpm — the Jintachi deserves serious consideration.
