Overview

Can we still speak of the first KTM 990 Super Duke as a simple motorcycle? In 2005, the Austrian machine had already punched the market in the face with a brutal aesthetic and an electric handling. Two years later, the 2007 version arrives, and one might believe it to be a simple cosmetic update. Let's look closer. The mudguard is new, the flanks redesigned, the rear light more modern, the mirrors larger. Details. But the essential is elsewhere, beneath the surface.

KTM 990 Super Duke

The real change, the one that matters to the rider, is invisible at first glance. The fuel tank gains 4 liters, going to 18.5 liters. A crucial modification that transforms the proposition. With the original 15 liters, the KTM 990 Super Duke 2006 was a sprinter, a quickly exhausted burst of madness. The 4 additional liters of the 2007 offer it new endurance, a capacity to hold out on long journeys or extended play sessions without that obsession with the next station. It's a gain of freedom. The headstock is also redesigned, more aggressive, and it finally integrates a real multifunction dashboard, worthy of a motorcycle in this category, replacing the minimalist instrumentation of the earlier models. A welcome evolution.

But KTM does not merely correct weaknesses. It also muscles up the offensive. The 48 mm WP fork now features radial four-piston calipers, and the discs are 320 mm. This braking, of formidable efficiency, then positions itself at the level of the best sportbikes on the market, like the Ducati 1098 which had just released its monoblock calipers. It's a giant step for braking reliability and the feeling of control. Yet, at the same time, the motorcycle must comply with Euro 3 standards. It becomes cleaner, and its geometry is slightly retouched for more stability, with a more open rake angle. Some purists will see this as the beginning of wisdom, a possible appeasement.

Should one worry? Absolutely not. With its 122 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque coming from a 999 cc LC8 twin, its dry weight of 186 kg and its stripped-down look, the KTM 990 Super Duke 2007 remains a weapon of urban provocation. It does not seek discretion. It is made for those who want a motorcycle that is expressive, direct, with a frank mechanical character and an imposing physical presence. This is the definition of the streetfighter before the era of electronic aids. For 12550 € at the time, it offered a raw experience, sometimes rough on certain reliability points, but of rare authenticity. Compared to a more refined Honda CB1000R or a more stylized Ducati Monster, the Super Duke chooses the path of mechanical frankness and physical engagement. It is not suitable for a beginner, but for a rider who seeks a direct connection, a motorcycle that speaks without filter. The 2007 generation, with its larger fuel tank and improved braking, is often considered a more accomplished and more usable version for everyday use than the first editions, without having lost its soul as a terror of the streets.
