Overview
Right away, let's cut to the chase. If you're looking for a discreet motorcycle, move along. The 2005 KTM 990 Super Duke is the mechanical equivalent of a punch in a quiet room. Its bright orange design, aggressive lines, and V2 engine that growls from the first revs immediately turn you into a public attraction. At the time, facing an Italian Brutale or a more sensible Japanese bike, it embraced its role as an agitator with an arrogance that commands respect. It's a declaration of war on banality.

On the saddle, the feeling of solidity is immediate. The chromoly frame, the 48 mm adjustable WP inverted fork, and the massive controls inspire confidence. The riding position is a unique blend: an upright torso, almost majestic, but the legs are folded as on a sportbike. This seat height of 855 mm offers an unobstructed view, but it may intimidate those of smaller stature. The dashboard, typically KTM, is clear with its analog and digital tachometer, reminding you that the rev limiter intervenes at 9500 rpm. And you'll reach it often, because the 999 cc LC8 engine is a real pervert. Its 122 horsepower at 9000 rpm and, above all, its 100 Nm of torque available from 7000 rpm give the impression of an inexhaustible reserve. First gear pulls well beyond 130 km/h, and the long sixth gear allows you to brush 230 km/h without the twin seeming strained. Compared to a Japanese V2 of the time, the KTM 990 Super Duke displays a much wilder nervousness and character.
But this sweet madness comes at a price, and not just the 12230 euros it cost back then. Let's be frank about the reliability of the KTM 990 Super Duke. Early models, like this 2005, may have had teething problems, often related to the injection system. Good maintenance is crucial. Then there's the legendary Achilles' heel: range. With its 15-liter tank, the reserve light often comes on around 100 km. A real shame for a touring bike. Fortunately, this defect was well known, and owners of used KTM 990 Super Duke R know that you have to anticipate fuel stops. For the rest, the mechanics, once run-in and pampered, prove to be robust. The overall finish, with its WP components and single-block muffler, is excellent, even if some details like the poorly placed center stand or the weak horn are annoying.
So, who is this for? Certainly not a beginner, despite its surprising agility for its 194 kg in running order. It's the ideal mount for the rider looking for a naked bike with a raw, unfiltered character, the opposite of overly polished machines. It excels in brisk rides, devouring secondary roads with remarkable precision. The 2005 KTM 990 Super Duke, and its more radical derivatives like the R, laid the foundations of a legend. It’s not perfect, it’s thirsty, and demanding, but it offers a sincerity and a pure connection to the rider that few competitors offered. It's a motorcycle that trains you, or breaks you, but never leaves you indifferent. A true stroke of genius tinged with recklessness.
