Overview
Is it still possible, today, to be moved by a motorcycle that has celebrated its fifteenth birthday? The answer is a frank and massive "yes" when we talk about the 2009 KTM 990 Super Duke R. It wasn't just a sporty variant; it was the embodiment of a mindset: that of a brand that decided that compromise was a vulgar word. Faced with often-refined Japanese roadsters, the Katoche came out swinging. Testing the KTM 990 Super Duke R at the time was like being scolded by an angry mechanical professor, but who would be right.

Its heart, a 999 cm3 LC8 V2, is the archetype of a temperamental engine. With 132 horsepower at 9000 rpm and 102 Nm of torque that arrives like a slap at 7000 rpm, it doesn't seek refinement; it imposes its will. The comparison with the twin of a Brutale or a Monster of the time is enlightening: where the Italians sing, the Austrian roars and growls. The original Akrapovic exhausts are largely responsible, giving this 2009 KTM 990 Super Duke R a raspy and antisocial voice. The orange trellis frame, a signature of the brand, is more than just an aesthetic argument for a KTM 990 Super Duke R kit; it's the framework of a precision weapon.
Because that's what it is. With a weight announced at 200 kg fully fueled, a seat at 855 mm, and a WP-tuned front suspension, the 990 R is disconcertingly nervous. The reduced rake transforms it into a feline on the front, always ready to dive into a corner. It takes a firm hand and a bit of courage to tame it, the steering damper acting as a necessary mediator. It's clearly not a motorcycle for beginners, but the perfect toy for the demanding track rider looking for raw sensations, far from the omnipresent electronic assistance of today.
With a new price approaching 14,000 euros, it was clearly positioned at the top of the range. Today, looking for a used KTM 990 Super Duke R is an excellent calculation for the enthusiast. Whether it's a 2008, 2011, or 2013 model, the essence of the project remains intact. Opinions on the KTM 990 Super Duke R converge: it's a demanding motorcycle, sometimes tiring, but terribly exhilarating and unique. It never sought to please everyone, and that's precisely what forges its legend. Faced with the sophistication of the future 1290, this 990 retains the aura of the purist, the motorcycle that answers "no" when you politely ask it to turn. A character that, in the age of digital smoothing, has never been so precious.
