Overview
We often talk about roadsters as civilized motorcycles, front-wheel drive cars dressed in black. But in 2008, KTM reminded us that the word "roadster" can also be synonymous with a punch. The KTM 990 Super Duke R is not a compromise motorcycle. It's a declaration of war on apathy, a 999 cc twin that refuses any form of politeness. With 132 horsepower delivered at 9000 rpm, and a torque of 102 Nm that arrives with a brutal generosity at 7000 rpm, it was not designed for shopping. It was forged to hurt, and to do it with an orange smile.

Compared to a Yamaha MT-09 of the time or even a Ducati Monster 1100, the philosophy is radically different. KTM does not seek balance, but the predominance of aggression. The tubular trellis frame, a signature of the brand, is not an aesthetic element, it is the armature of a nervous animal. A seat at 865 mm places the rider high, dominant, and with an announced weight of 200 kg fully fueled, the machine feels lighter than it is. That's where KTM's art lies: making the numbers lie thanks to a geometry studied for liveliness. The 48 mm WP inverted fork and the single shock absorber are configured for precision, not for comfort. The braking system, with its two 320 mm discs and radial calipers, is an authoritative system. It stops, it does not suggest.
The heart of this 2008 KTM 990 Super Duke R is its engine, a 75° V-twin that has benefited from a serious overhaul. New connecting rods and pistons, larger titanium valves, all breathing through optimized injectors. The result is an electric rev range, a power that unfolds linearly but with constant intensity. And the sound? The original Akrapovic exhausts give this twin a deep and hoarse voice, a perfect musical accompaniment to performance. On the road, it demands total attention. It does not forgive the pilot's weakness. It is made for those who seek a raw, immediate connection, unfiltered. The 18.5-liter tank allows for extended sessions, but it is mainly the character that tires you, or exalts you, before the fuel runs out.
Today, finding a used KTM 990 Super Duke R can be an excellent alternative to acquire a motorcycle with character at a reasonable price. The 2009, 2011 or 2013 versions continued this philosophy with adjustments. Compared to the future 1290 Super Duke R, the 990 is perhaps less extreme in power, but it is often described as more "direct," less assisted, more pure in its communication. A KTM 990 Super Duke R test remains a formative experience for any enthusiast of lively roadsters. It is not a motorcycle for beginners, nor for the quiet touring rider. It is the tool of the urban track rider, of the one who wants to transform every journey into an exercise in concentration and control. Its original price, 13950 euros, placed it in competition with sportbikes, but it offered, and still offers, a radically different sensation. It is a motorcycle that teaches one thing: performance is not always a matter of numbers, but of character. And character, this KTM 990 Super Duke R has a full tank of it.
