Overview
When a 249.9 cc single-cylinder four-stroke tips the scales at just 98.2 kg while delivering 45 horsepower on demand, it's easy to understand why the KTM 250 SX-F dominated MX2 World Championship podiums for years. This is no stroke of luck or favorable scheduling: it's the result of precision engineering built around a single objective — winning.

The engine is the heart of the project, and it deserves a closer look. With a bore of 78 mm, a stroke of 52.3 mm, and a compression ratio pushed to 14:1, this single revs high — very high — rewarding the rider with a crisp response across the entire rev range. The Keihin 44 mm throttle body injection manages fueling with surgical precision, and the handlebar-mounted map selector adds a tactical dimension that competitors like the Yamaha YZ250F or Honda CRF250R of the era simply didn't offer. Traction control, launch control, enhanced power mode: three functions accessible with a thumb press, which makes a concrete difference on a starting grid. The holeshot isn't won on talent alone.
The 25CrMo4 steel frame also deserves special mention. This central tube architecture delivers high torsional rigidity combined with calculated longitudinal flex, allowing the bike to absorb jumps without punishing the rider. The result: 98.2 kg dry, including the Mitsuba electric starter, at a time when rivals still required their riders to kick-start. That advantage may seem trivial for an amateur rider, but in competition, every second lost restarting a downed machine in a corner translates directly into lost championship positions. The 48 mm WP AER 48 inverted air-spring fork, adjustable without special tools, rounds out a front end that is both precise and communicative. The 265 grams saved on the redesigned outer tubes for 2017 illustrate the brand's philosophy: nothing is left to chance.
At €8,850, the KTM 250 SX-F positions itself clearly as a serious competition machine, not a recreational toy. The 960 mm seat height and 370 mm ground clearance immediately rule out shorter riders or beginners looking for a first bike. This segment — 250 four-stroke motocross — targets riders who have already mastered the fundamentals and want to progress in regional or national championships. In that arena, the 2017 KTM 250 SX-F holds a strong position against the technically related Husqvarna FC 250 or the more accessible but electronically less refined Kawasaki KXF 250. For those looking at a used KTM 250 SX-F today, the 2017 and 2018 model years represent a solid starting point: the engine is reliable, connecting rod bearing design has extended crankshaft service intervals, and parts remain readily available.
The 7-liter tank, the one-piece cast aluminum swingarm, Brembo brakes with Galfer discs, Excel rims with CNC-machined hubs: every component tells the same story — a machine built without visible budgetary compromise. It is not the most versatile bike on the market, nor does it try to be. On a well-prepared motocross track, in the hands of a competent rider, the KTM 250 SX-F delivers exactly what it promises: raw efficiency and handling that pushes you to go beyond your own limits with every moto.
