Overview
Do you remember the era when top-speed wars dominated magazines? Kawasaki, with its ZX-12R, launched a missile into the race to catch up with the Hayabusa. The 2005 version is this honed weapon, the one that learned to run without losing its explosive nature. Beneath a nearly identical appearance – a taller screen, more discreet indicators – this machine underwent an internal transformation that changes everything.

The heart remains a monument. This 1199 cm3 four-cylinder engine delivers 178 horsepower at 10,500 rpm, with a torque of 134 Nm arriving lower, at 7,500 rpm. It is one of the most expressive engines of its time, rivaling that of the R1 and the GSX1300R Hayabusa. Kawasaki simply retouched the mapping and increased the crankshaft inertia, but the essential is there: a brutal but manageable acceleration, a power that allows you to be propelled out of corners with surprising docility. The question "what is the power of the Kawasaki ZX-12R?" finds its answer here, in this force that is always available but better channeled.
The real work was the chassis. The first ZX-12R, with its aluminum monocoque frame, was stable but heavy, lacking agility compared to a more nimble Suzuki GSX-R 1300. Kawasaki reacted. Modified geometry, increased rigidity, a host of details transformed the motorcycle. It weighs 250 kg fully fueled, a respectable weight, but the new version is more incisive. The position, close to a sport-GT, facilitates changes in angle. There remains a slight resistance to straighten, but it is far from the struggle imposed by the old one. Riding this Kawasaki ZX-12R requires anticipation, because the colossal power and mass do not forgive amateurism.

The suspensions have also gained in comfort without sacrificing stability, and the braking adopts radial four-piston calipers on 320 mm discs. One can still criticize the 200 mm rear tire, an aesthetic choice that slightly penalizes maneuverability. But the balance is better. This Kawasaki ZX-12R motorcycle, almost the same price as the Hayabusa at launch (€13,399), positioned itself as a more accessible hypersport, without denying its madness.
Today, searching for a used Kawasaki ZX-12R 1200 allows you to rediscover this marginal but fascinating machine. It does not handle like a modern, lighter and more agile hypersport. It is for the touring rider who wants a top speed of nearly 300 km/h without extreme brutality, for those who appreciate a monumental engine in a chassis that is finally civilized. Kawasaki succeeded here: to make a missile a vehicle, without extinguishing its fire.
