Overview
We all remember the shockwave. While Suzuki had just unleashed its missile, the Hayabusa, with a staggering speedometer, Kawasaki responded with samurai-like discretion. But don't be fooled, the 2000 ZX-12R was not a timid proposition. It was a declaration of war, a 1200 cm3 engine sending 180 horsepower to brush against 320 km/h. When asked what the power of the Kawasaki ZX-12R is, the answer is simple: enough to glue you to the tank and blur the landscape. This Kawasaki ZX-12R positioned itself clearly as a direct rival to the Busa, with the ambition of being the fastest production machine in the world.

Where most manufacturers opted for perimeter frames, Kawasaki engineers brought out the heavy artillery. They chose a monocoque aluminum structure, a single piece serving as both a skeleton and an airbox. This architecture, inherited from the aerospace industry, aimed for absolute rigidity for straight-line stability worthy of a train. And on this point, mission accomplished. The Ninja ZX-12R devours highways with disconcerting serenity, its 20-liter tank promising long raids. But this rigidity comes at a price in curves. The beast, with its 215 kilograms dry weight, is less playful than a GSX-R 1000 of the time. It demands grip and physical commitment in tight chicanes. It doesn't give itself, it must be earned.
Fortunately, the engine is there to make you forget the effort. What an engine. This 1200 cm3 inline four-cylinder is a mechanical delight, with exemplary generosity and fullness. Its 134 Nm of torque, available from mid-range, propels you with an authority that commands respect. This is where the Kawasaki ZX-12R 1200 finds its true playground: open roads, sweeping curves, endless acceleration. The fairing, designed in a wind tunnel, offers remarkable protection, even if its air intakes in the shape of breadcrumbs divide aesthetes.

So, for whom? Certainly not for a beginner, nor for a pure track rider. The ZX-12R is the ideal mount for the demanding sport touring rider, for those seeking extravagance and regularity over long distances, without compromise on power delivery. Today, looking for a used Kawasaki ZX-12R is an excellent plan to acquire an icon of pure speed. Its price at the time, around 14,200 euros, made it a significant investment. Today, models can be found, including 2003 Kawasaki ZX-12R models, for much more accessible sums, around 4500 euros for a beautiful example. It's an opportunity to enter the legend, provided you accept its character and its consumption, in line with its rather generous performance. A machine that, more than twenty years later, still commands the same respect.
