Overview
Twenty years. That is how long it took for Borgo Panigale to pay Ayrton Senna a tribute worthy of what he represented. In 1994, the Brazilian rider visited the Bolognese factory, placed his hand on a 916, and personally chose the grey shade that would dress the first series bearing his name. A few weeks later, he was gone at Imola. That colour, that particular grey, became a relic. Ducati knew it, preserved it, and it is precisely that grey found on this 1199 Panigale S Senna, twenty years later.

The lineage with the 916 SP Senna of 1995, then the Senna II and III of subsequent years, is embraced right down to the red rims. Only 161 units will leave the assembly line — a figure that is anything but arbitrary, as it corresponds to Ayrton's number of Grand Prix starts. Each machine receives a numbered plate on the fork yoke, a racing exhaust, and those gold details that quietly hint at the electronic nature of the Öhlins suspension. The motorcycle will be sold exclusively in Brazil, his homeland, from June 2014. For the collector, it is a museum piece. For the enthusiast, it is a slap in the face at €33,259.
But beneath the ceremonial livery lies a machine that is anything but honorary. The 1199 cc Superquadro L-twin develops 195 horsepower at 10,750 rpm and 132.4 Nm at 9,000 rpm. On a twin. These figures place the Panigale in a category of its own, far above what an Aprilia RSV4, a BMW S 1000 RR, or a Kawasaki ZX-10R offer with their four-cylinder engines. A bore of 112 mm for a stroke of just 60.8 mm gives some idea of the rev range required to reach that power output, with 12,000 rpm being the upper limit of an engine built for the stratosphere. The weight follows this logic of pure competition: 164 kg dry, 188 kg fully fuelled — figures close to those of a Triumph 675 Daytona despite nearly double the displacement. This power-to-weight ratio has no equivalent in the production hypersport market.
The S version, from which this Senna edition is derived, features electronically controlled Öhlins NIX30 43 mm inverted forks and a TTX36 shock absorber, three-level ABS, and configurable engine management covering injection modes, eight-position traction control, and engine braking. The frame dispenses with the tubular trellis that had defined the visual identity of Ducati sports bikes since the 916, in favour of an aluminium monocoque structure in which the engine assumes a central load-bearing role. This is a profound paradigm shift, not a simple refresh. The whole package rests on a full digital TFT dashboard that makes the instrumentation of its Japanese competitors look obsolete by comparison.
This is not a motorcycle for beginners, nor even for intermediate riders. The 1199 Panigale S Senna is aimed at those who already master the track, who know how to exploit sophisticated electronics without being overwhelmed by 195 horsepower on a 188 kg machine. It is also aimed at — and perhaps above all — collectors who understand what a serial number between 1 and 161 means, engraved on a plate set beneath that grey chosen by Senna himself thirty years before this motorcycle was released. The price of €33,259 is not that of an ordinary track tool. It is the asking price of a signed work of art, a superbike that carries as much history as it does horsepower.
