Overview
You remember that period when the hyper-sportive war revolved around a magic number, 300 km/h? Suzuki had launched its Hayabusa, a monster that crushed everything in its path. Kawasaki, in a rush, responded with the ZX-12R in 2000. But the first version was a raw missile, a little too heavy and awkward in corners. For 2002, Kawa engineers decided to polish it, to make it more civilized without sacrificing its insane power.

The essential element is this engine. A 1200 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine delivering 178 horsepower at 10500 rpm. This is the maximum power of the Kawasaki ZX-12R, a figure that still makes the stopwatch tremble today. The torque, 134 Nm, is there to propel you from mid-range speeds. They kept the soul of this block, just adjusted the mapping and the clutch for a better feel. On the road, it’s an avalanche of power, but an avalanche that you can dose. It shows itself to be docile, allows you to accelerate very early on exiting corners, but always keep a margin, because 250 kg fully fueled requires anticipation.
The real change is in the chassis. The aluminum monocoque frame remains, but the geometry is revised. Steering angle more open, rake increased. Result, the bike loses this heaviness and this tendency to widen in corners that handicapped the first generation. It becomes more incisive, almost agile. The comparison with the GSX-R 1300 Hayabusa is now possible, the Kawasaki ZX-12R is no longer this pachyderm a little slow to respond. The position, typical sport-touring, also helps, you are less bent over, more in connection with the machine.

Remains the 200 mm rear tire, a visual signature that is striking but, objectively, somewhat limits ultimate maneuverability. The suspension, more comfortable, retains exemplary stability, especially when you approach the maximum speed of the Kawasaki ZX-12R, those famous 298 km/h that brush the mythical wall. It is a machine that demands respect, not the tool of a beginner. It is aimed at the touring rider who wants long-distance performance, at the track rider who seeks a stable and powerful base.
Today, on the used market, a Kawasaki ZX-12R 1200 is found around €4490, a price that makes it very accessible for those looking for a historic hyper-sportive. Its average consumption is not a subject, we are talking about a vehicle for enthusiasts. It is this Kawasaki ZX-12R motorcycle, a little marginal, often underestimated, but which has managed to evolve into a more rigorous and more pleasant machine to ride than its first version. It deserves to be rediscovered, because it captures a unique moment in motorcycle history, when raw power began to learn nuances.
