Overview

From the DNA of racing in the Indian Challenger? Nothing seems to suggest it.... Except when you’ve seen a few "King of the Baggers" races. The manufacturer is leveraging this experience to improve its large Powerplus twin since 2025. With 2 mm of bore added, the engine grows from 1769 cm3 to 1834 cm3. These improvements allow it to produce an additional 4 horsepower, for a total of 126 horsepower. Torque also progresses, reaching 18.5 mkg at the same rpm as before.

This type of machine always appreciates a little extra torque. To accompany this upgrade, a dose of additional technologies makes its appearance; to be discovered in the electronic equipment, four paragraphs later.

The bagger accesses another dimension with the Indian Challenger. Its name sounds good because this machine is a real challenge, a stone thrown in the face of American culture. It's big, massive, a huge twin, a face to crush yours on the sidewalk... but what a transgression of the sacred, holy air-cooled Big Block. In the Challenger, it’s a high-displacement twin with exhaust fumes evacuated by a coolant system. Kick off your boots and brace your knees – the power is present in abundance in this Indian.

In the tavern where Harley Road Glides gather, the Challenger crashes its wheel into the counter. It looks at them, provokes them, and gives a handlebar twist on each side. Unlike other baggers from the brand, such as the Chieftain, its head doesn’t turn. It’s mounted on an aluminum chassis, not on the handlebar. Exactly the same specificity that distinguishes the Street and Electra Glide from the Milwaukee competitor; this lightens the steering.

One of them attempts a staring contest. Nothing to unhorse the Indian, proud of its heavy, tormented, unusual gaze. The central porthole is complemented by a protean cowling. Two lateral blocks featuring a striking LED signature sit as lieutenants of the lighting. Is it beautiful? No, it's manifest, marking, brazen, and confronting! In short, it provokes the competition and intrigues passersby. By the way, have you noticed the raised Sioux head on the front fender?

The barkeeper sensed sulfur all the way to the tips of the tires: "Go explain yourselves outside!!!" The stranger was waiting for just that. To the Harley Milwaukee 8, the Indian responds with a Powerplus 112 ci of considerable caliber. Based on the 1133 from the Scout, this engine has liquid cooling, 4 valves, and 1 ACT per cylinder. Although less burly than the Thunderstroke air-cooled engine, it will assert itself with a level of fury superior. Capable of taking more revs, it mainly presents exceptional power values for an American. 2023 improvements allow its clutch to gain in smoothness and ease. The left hand will appreciate the reduced effort with each gear change.

Regarding the chassis, the Challenger makes a strong impression. At the end of the 43 mm inverted fork, you’re met with Brembo monobloc calipers with M4.32 radial fixation. It might not mean much to you..... Let’s simplify by specifying that the old Ducati Panigale V2 is equipped with the same jaws.

In terms of electronics, it’s an open bar. The Challenger benefits from three Riding Modes (Standard – Sport – Rain), traction control, cruise control, an IMU inertial sensor, keyless start, tire pressure monitoring, cornering ABS, the Ride Command infotainment system with a 7-inch screen / radio / GPS / Apple CarPlay and all the trimmings, a USB port, and Bluetooth pairing. For comfort, the seat is for long-distance riding, the saddlebags can hold 68 liters, the windshield is electrically adjustable, and the ventilation outlets are adjustable. 2025 brought the joys of radar technology: a presence warning in the blind spot appears, a warning system if a vehicle approaches the rear too closely, and in the same vein, a rear lighting function to signal to said vehicle that it is approaching your rear dangerously. A combined front/rear braking system and a hill-hold assist complete the package.

Some accessories have appeared with each model year, such as the ClimaCommand seat providing heat or cold, an improvement to the audio system, the Pathfinder S adaptive headlight, a 64-liter trunk, several windshields, sissy bars, etc.

From near or far, the Challenger looks tough. And heavy. This bagger frightens both the scale and the other machines in the segment. 372 kilograms of metal from Illinois. A mass, like any good motorized American. Luckily there’s plenty of serious mkg to carry all that. How far? That’s up to you to challenge.

The Challenger is also available in a Dark Horse version, more tenebrous, distinguished by its colors and its choice of black parts.
