Overview

Imagine a Honda engineer, on an evening of great inspiration, deciding to rip the fairing off a Gold Wing, toss the saddlebags in a dumpster, and set the result in front of his colleagues to see what they think. That is roughly the story of the Valkyrie F6C, a muscular cruiser that breaks away from the company's grand touring philosophy, and owns that choice with fine insolence.

Honda 1800 GOLDWING F6C Valkyrie

Beneath the extravagant bodywork, the 1832 cc flat-six is the same unit found in the Gold Wing, reworked internally to sound different. A specific intake and asymmetric exhausts — the left silencer deliberately more voluminous than the right — give the engine its own voice: deep and visceral. The 114 horsepower peaks at 5500 rpm, which is respectable without being electrifying, but it is the torque that makes all the difference: 165.7 Nm available from 4000 rpm. On a machine of this size, that figure means an immediate shove in the back, with no need to chase the rev range. The five-speed shaft drive handles the rest cleanly, without brutality.

Honda's work was not limited to undressing the GL 1800. The twin-spar aluminum frame was recalibrated to account for the 70 kilograms of missing bodywork, with mass distribution adjusted to 49.9/50.1, softened engine mounts, and a rake angle of 29.5 degrees that widens the steering geometry. The front wheel grows to 19 inches, the seat sits at 734 mm — a compromise between the classic GL and the F6B. The total wet weight of 341 kilograms remains substantial, but the Valkyrie comes in significantly below its parent. The braking follows the same logic: two 310 mm front discs with radial four-piston calipers, a 316 mm rear disc, and standard ABS. A serious package for a machine that has no intention of becoming unmanageable in the city.

And that is precisely where this Honda plays much of its hand. The intended audience is not the long-distance tourer spending summers on Alpine roads with a GPS and full luggage. The Valkyrie targets the rider who wants a credible European cruiser with real engineering behind the muscle show — capable of handling city streets without breaking a sweat and motorways without suffering. At €21,699, it positions itself above an Indian Scout or a first-generation Ducati Diavel, but below what a well-equipped Harley-Davidson Fat Bob costs. The displacement-to-price ratio remains defensible when you know what this engine contains.

What may give pause is precisely the visual excess. The Valkyrie does not go unnoticed, and that is not for everyone. Some will see a successful provocation, others gratuitous extravagance. But Honda was smart enough not to sacrifice the mechanics on the altar of style: the 45 mm pneumatically assisted telescopic fork and the single rear shock with single-sided swingarm deliver a serious response. With a 23.2-liter tank and reasonable fuel consumption for the displacement, range remains manageable. The claimed top speed of 200 km/h will surprise no one: this is not a sportbike, it is a self-respecting cruiser. A cruiser with a flat-six, which is already more than enough to stand apart from the ordinary.
