Who remembers the era when the Fireblade terrorized the competition? In 2015, Honda attempts to rekindle that flame with the CBR 1000 RR SP, a sharpened version of its hypersport, dressed in Marc Marquez's Repsol colors. Gold wheels, aggressive lines, a silhouette built for attack: this SP makes no secret of its ambitions. It wants the track, and it makes that clear from the very first glance.

The big selling point of this edition is its chassis. Honda ditched the Showa BPF fork from the standard version to install a 43 mm Öhlins NIX30 inverted fork, mounted on dedicated triple clamps and a steel steering stem. At the rear, an Öhlins TTX36 mono-shock completes the picture, with reinforced mounting points to improve the rigidity of the aluminum twin-spar frame. The whole setup comes track-ready straight from the factory. No need to stop by the workshop before hitting the circuit. On the braking side, Brembo supplies radial-mount monoblock calipers on two 320 mm discs, with pistons dedicated to this version. The entire package breathes competition. The riding position follows the same logic: footpegs moved back 10 mm, clip-ons with a wider angle, seat and ground clearance raised by 4 mm. The lean angle reaches 47 degrees, compared to 46 for the standard RR. The factory-fitted Pirelli SuperCorsa SP tires, 120/70-17 at the front and 190/50-17 at the rear, are road-legal but clearly designed for the smooth tarmac of a racetrack.
Beneath the fairing, the 999 cc inline four-cylinder produces 181 horsepower at 12,250 rpm and 113.8 Nm of torque at 10,500 rpm, thanks to work on the valve seats and intake ports. Hand-selected pistons and connecting rods, a lighter oil pump: Honda sweats the details. Yet those 181 horsepower fall short of the 200 hp already offered by the BMW S 1000 RR or the Kawasaki ZX-10R at the same time. The Japanese four-cylinder is lively and enjoyable, but it lacks the raw punch to play in the same league.
And then there's the sore subject: ABS. Honda sticks with its combined C-ABS, offered as an option. The system works well — its endurance racing track record proves it. But it adds 11 kg to the scales, when competing solutions from Bosch or Nissin add only two. On a sportbike listed at 199 kg wet and priced at 19,199 euros, that extra weight is hard to justify. Especially when the competition comes standard with traction control, multiple engine maps, and a lightweight sport ABS. The CBR 1000 RR SP offers none of that.
This Fireblade SP remains an appealing machine for Honda loyalists, those who value Japanese build quality and the pleasure of a well-bred chassis. The single-seat rear subframe, the absence of passenger footpegs, the 17.7-liter tank for stringing sessions together: everything is designed for the rider alone against the clock. But in 2015, passion is no longer enough to make up for the technological gap. Against rivals bristling with electronics and packing more power, the SP plays the emotion card rather than the pure efficiency one. A respectable choice, but one that confines it to an audience of connoisseurs rather than lap-time hunters.
