Overview
Who said that a 1000 cm³ roadster had to necessarily spit fire and terrorize tires? In 2009, while the competition was vying for supremacy with repurposed hypersport engines, Honda took a counter-trend approach with its CBF 1000. The idea? To take the proven concept of the smaller CBF 600, graft a four-cylinder engine from the Fireblade onto it, but deliberately remove 40 horsepower. The result is a machine that displays 100 hp at 8000 rpm and a torque of 9.8 mkg available from 6500 rpm, figures that sound almost modest compared to a Yamaha FZ1 or a Kawasaki Z1000 of the time. Yet, that is the very spirit of the beast: to prioritize everyday usability over spec sheet numbers.

On the saddle, this philosophy is confirmed. The engine, albeit castrated, delivers its power with exemplary linearity and diesel-like smoothness, making sixth-gear roll-ons absolutely relaxed. The maximum speed is around 230 km/h, but it is mainly between 3000 and 7000 rpm that the CBF 1000 lives, where its generous torque and placid character shine. The legendary reliability of the Honda engine is, of course, not an empty word, a significant argument when looking for a used Honda CBF 1000. The chassis, a classic steel mono-backbone, and the deliberately sensible cycle parts (41 mm conventional fork, 120/160 tires) prevent it from getting into mischief. It weighs 250 kg fully fueled, a noticeable weight, but one that is forgotten once underway thanks to a well-placed center of gravity.
Visually, there is no revolution. The CBF 1000 F, with its half-fairing and serene gaze, embodies a functional and reassuring design. The adjustable screen, the adjustable seat, and the adaptable handlebars promise comfort over long distances. It is a motorcycle designed from the start for travel, as evidenced by the numerous listings for a Honda CBF 1000 luggage case or a Honda CBF 1000 F luggage rack on classifieds websites. The Travel Edition, with its integrated cases, is the logical culmination of this. Its 19-liter tank and reasonable fuel consumption make it a discreet but effective touring machine.
So, target audience? Clearly the pragmatic globetrotter, the motorcyclist who is looking for a versatile, reliable, and accessible machine, perhaps second-hand. The new price was around 9790 euros, but today, the used Honda CBF 1000 market - classifieds sites are full of them - is very attractive. Faced with more nervous and demanding roadsters, the CBF 1000 chooses maturity. It doesn’t make you shiver, it reassures. It doesn’t dominate a group, it provides a service. A bold gamble at the time, which today makes it a solid and intelligent opportunity for those who prioritize travel over pure performance.
