Overview
Could Harley-Davidson really design a motorcycle for Europe’s winding roads, or was it just a marketing promise to please dealers? In 2009, the XR 1200 Sportster answered yes, with a strong character that surprised more than one person. We’re no longer talking about a simple custom with a retro look, but an authentic sporty proposition, grafting American flat track DNA onto a chassis capable of holding its own on the road.

The heart of the beast remains that good old 1203 cm³ Evolution V-twin, but reworked for the occasion. With 90 horsepower released at 7000 rpm and, above all, a torque of 96 Nm available from 3700 rpm, it has the typical Harley growl, but with a desire to rev that is not common in the range. The five-speed gearbox and belt drive ensure smoothness, even if a sixth gear for the highway would have been appreciated. The real change comes from the rest: a 43 mm Showa inverted fork, front dual disc brakes with four-piston calipers, and a frame that finally accepts leaning. At 263 kg fully fueled, it’s not a featherweight, but its low center of gravity and a 76.5 cm seat height make it surprisingly agile.
Compared to a Triumph Bonneville or a Ducati Monster of the time, the XR 1200 Sportster plays in a category of its own. It doesn’t have the ultimate refinement of a Japanese bike nor the pure madness of an Italian one. Its strength lies in its raw identity. The engine vibrates, growls, and smells of hot gasoline, offering a sensory experience that water-cooled engines have often dulled. On mountain roads, it proves faithful and reassuring, swallowing curves with a stability that makes you forget its weight. On the other hand, the 13.3-liter tank imposes frequent stops, and the original price, around 11,000 euros, positioned the machine in the upper echelons.
Today, the model is a cult for enthusiasts looking for an authentic Harley with a sporty temperament. If you’re wondering what the price of a 2010 Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster is in France on the used market, you’ll have to search. Well-maintained examples are often negotiated between 7,000 and 9,000 euros, an investment for a motorcycle with a rare personality. It will seduce the demanding road warrior who wants character without clichés, or the dilettante track rider who appreciates a retro style with real skills. It wasn’t a perfect motorcycle, but it was a courageous Harley, and that’s priceless.
