Overview
With its FTR 1200, Indian wanted to bring the spirit of Flat Track to the road. It was also an opportunity to debut an engine much more powerful than usual for the American brand. A roadster, not too much displacement, and enough horsepower to surprise observers. More than 120 horsepower from a 1200, we hadn’t seen that since the 1250 V-Rod. The entire FTR family benefited from a few improvements in 2021 (my2022) - here, they were limited to better engine response and the addition of the rear cylinder deactivation system at idle. But there's new stuff coming soon ;-)
Between each piston stroke, the FTR thinks of its track cousin, the Scout FTR 750, the plumes of dirt it raises, the trend of wheels eager for roads that see only asphalt. It then adopts a more rugged stance and equips itself with accessories to become the FTR 1200 Rally.
A bit of a scrambler this FTR?!? Not quite, but it recovers some of its attributes. The most obvious is the possession of spoked rims; more for style than function, the machine having neither the look nor the presentation of an off-road machine. Yet, the motorcycle insists on this desire, as evidenced by the large-block tires, Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR. Quite versatile mixed tires, and manageable as long as the terrain isn't too greasy. A small windscreen protects the speedometer. The rider will also have a ‘ProTaper’ handlebar 50 mm higher, giving a more upright and relaxed riding position.
With the Illinois tough-guy look, the FTR 1200 Rally delivers a custom brown seat, a speed regulator, a USB port for charging nomadic devices, LED headlights and turn signals, a steel trellis frame, an inverted fork and Brembo 4-piston radial-mount brakes.
As well as a largely enriched electronics package in 2023. Like many Indian models, the FTR benefits from three Riding Modes to vary the ride to suit its mood. "Sport", "Standard" or "Rain" to define the character of the moment. This is complemented by traction control, supervised by an inertial measurement unit. The safety net will thus be adjusted in its intervention according to the angle taken by the machine, as well as the ABS which becomes cornering. On the instrumentation side, everything goes high-tech with a 10 cm circular TFT screen. The rider will thus have the RideCommand system with Bluetooth management, telephone pairing, GPS navigation... and all of this at their fingertips since the window is touch-sensitive.
Indian has also revised the braking system for more firmness in terms of sensations but without specifying how. The clutch has been changed, still with performance in mind. Finally, all FTRs benefit from a new sports exhaust.
Lovers of American motorcycles will pay more attention to the torque in force, a maximum of 12.2 mkg. Thus equipped, the Indian FTR 1200 Rally can go taunt the terraces, the pseudo-scramblers and roughen the roads bordering the lakes. Roads, mind you; not the trails where trees are born.
