Overview
Imagine for a moment a Harley that wouldn’t seek to lull you with the melody of straight pipes, but to glue you to the tarmac in a tight corner. That was the crazy gamble of the XR 1200 Sportster in 2008, a machine that made purists grind their teeth while igniting a spark in sporty riders. It didn't descend from a line of chrome baggers, but directly from the dirt tracks of the flat track, carrying within it the soul of the legendary XR 750. It’s perhaps the most heretical Harley ever produced in series, and that’s precisely what made it fascinating.

The promise was clear: a Sportster tailored for Europe's winding roads. The European team added its touch to the development, shaking up Milwaukee’s habits regarding the chassis and suspensions. We found a 43 mm Showa inverted fork and Nissin front dual-disc braking, equipment that was almost subversive for the brand at the time. The 1203 cm³ Evolution engine, although still air-cooled, was pushed to 90 horsepower, an honorable figure that, combined with a torque of 96 Nm available from 3700 rpm, provided a frank surge in the midrange. But let's be honest, facing a competitor like a Ducati Monster of the time, the XR 1200 was not a rocket. Its weight of 263 kg fully fueled was felt, and the maximum speed of 200 km/h recalled its aerodynamic and mechanical limits.
Yet, the charm worked elsewhere. This motorcycle didn't have the clinical coldness of a Japanese bike. It vibrated, growled, and transmitted a raw sensation with every throttle opening. The riding position, with its wide handlebar and mid-set footpegs, was a surprising compromise between agility and comfort, perfect for devouring departmental roads. With a seat height of 76.5 cm, it remained accessible, although its 13.3-liter tank imposed regular stops. Its true audience? The rider who wanted the style and timeless character of a Harley, but refused to be confined to straight lines. It was the anti-cruiser par excellence.
Today, the Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster has become a collector's item, a UFO appreciated by connoisseurs. If you are looking for one, know that its price on the used market has risen, far from its original new price. To give you an idea, it is not uncommon to wonder what is the price of a Harley-Davidson XR 1200 Sportster 2010 in France. Count often between 8,000 and 11,000 euros for a specimen in good condition, an amount that reflects its rarity and cult status. It didn't revolutionize the motorcycle world, but it proved that Harley could, when it really wanted to, break away from the beaten path. A gem for those who love machines with a history and a temperament of their own.
