Overview
Does a motorcycle necessarily have to be fast to be captivating? On board the Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom, the answer is a resounding no. Here, we don’t talk about horsepower or lap times, but about atmosphere and character. This 45° V-twin engine with a displacement of 1202 cm3, delivering 67 horsepower and a torque of 96 Nm available from 3750 rpm, is more of a statement of intent than a technical specification. It’s about feeling that pulse with every throttle opening, that deep sound, and the belt drive that transforms every ride into an event. For a little over €12,000, you’re buying a piece of American legend, with its immutable codes and assumed compromises.

The chassis, a steel double cradle, carries its 268 kg (wet weight) with a certain nonchalance. Posture is crucial: pull-back handlebars pulled back towards the rider, forward controls, and a low seat at 725 mm. This ergonomics, inherited from custom bikes, aims for comfort on long, straight roads and ease of use in the city, but it’s not designed for attacking hairpin turns. The 39 mm fork at 30° of rake and the 16-inch front wheel give a bulky appearance and a heavy steering feel at low speed, typical of the genre. Compared to a Japanese or European bike that is more responsive, the Sportster 1200 Custom requires conviction, not precision. It’s a motorcycle for those who ride with their heart, not with the stopwatch.
The evolutions made over the years, particularly on versions like the Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom CA 2013 or 2015 models, have sought to smooth out a few rough edges without betraying the character of the beast. The arrival of standard ABS, improved braking with a 300 mm front disc, and adjustable suspension have been significant steps. The improved electrical system and keyless start bring a welcome touch of modernity. But don't be fooled, the 17-liter tank and air-cooled engine remind you that you are riding a classic mechanical system, with all the charm and limitations that entails. The top speed is around 175 km/h, but it’s at 110 km/h on a departmental road that this Harley truly comes into its own.
So, what is the price of a Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom? It’s the price of a ticket to a very particular club. It’s not the motorcycle for a rushed beginner or a track rider seeking pure performance. It’s the ideal mount for the globetrotter who prioritizes sensation over yield, for the urban rider who wants to get around with panache, or for the enthusiast who collects pieces of history. Faced with more versatile and technological competitors, it may seem archaic, or even expensive. But for its devotees, no other machine provides this unique alchemy between the rider, the vibrating mechanics, and the road. It’s not to everyone’s taste, and that’s precisely what makes it strong.
