Overview
What’s the point of another Sportster in 2020, when the Softail range has swept everything before it? That's the question that inevitably comes to mind when you look at this XL Sportster 1200 Custom. It embodies a philosophy that has remained unchanged for decades, a credo made of vibrations, a low center of gravity, and a raw aesthetic. With its air-cooled 1202 cm3 Evolution engine, it delivers 68 horsepower and 96 Nm of torque, figures that seem paltry compared to European or Japanese competition. But here, mechanics are not about datasheets; it’s a matter of sensation. The torque is at the very bottom, available from 3500 rpm, and the bike pulls with a tractor-like consistency as soon as you open the throttle, never seeking the peak of the rev range. That’s both its charm and its limit.

The Custom version stands out with its attitude. The 30-degree-angled fork and the 16-inch front wheel give it a massive front end and a heavy steering feel at low speed, a character accentuated by the weight of 268 kg fully fueled. It’s not the most agile in the city, but once launched on a national road, it stabilizes and offers a poised, almost peaceful riding experience. The braking, with its single 300 mm disc at the front, does the job without flamboyance, aided by the standard ABS. It’s far from the bite of a Brembo caliper, but it corresponds to the cruising pace that this machine advocates. The low seat at 725 mm is a blessing for most riders, making the beast accessible even for a determined beginner, despite its weight.
The heart of the debate, when discussing the price of a Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom, is precisely this question of value. At over 12,600 euros new, it costs as much as a European roadster packed with electronics and twice as powerful. But buying a Sportster is acquiring a piece of history, a cultural object much more than a simple vehicle. The 17-liter tank, the chrome, the characteristic rumble of the V-Twin, everything is calibrated to evoke emotion, not to set records. For a traveler seeking pure sensation and a timeless image, it makes sense. For a track rider or an enthusiast of technology, it’s an anachronism on two wheels.
Looking at the evolutions of this generation, like the 2013, 2015 or even the 2006 models, shows a slow modernization. Adjustable suspensions and the LED rear light have arrived, but the soul remains intact. That’s both the strength and the weakness of the brand. The XL Sportster 1200 Custom will not convince those who seek efficiency at all costs. On the other hand, it speaks directly to those for whom a ride should first and foremost be a sensory experience, made of vibrations in the wrists and that deep sound that resonates in the back. It’s not fast, it’s not refined, but it has an indelible character. In an aseptic world, that’s priceless. Or rather, if it has a price, it’s high.
