Overview
When we talk about the foundation of the Harley-Davidson lineup, the Sportster name inevitably comes up. But be careful, base doesn't mean bland, and the XL Sportster 1200 Custom version, in its 2015 iteration, is striking proof of that. It is a machine that fully embraces its custom heritage, with a radical front end. Forget the 21-inch front wheel; here, we adopt a 16-inch front rim, fitted with a 130-section front tire, all coupled with a fork inclined at 30 degrees. The result is an ultra-laid-back stance, a stocky look, and steering that is characteristically heavy at low speed, which transforms into surprising agility once underway. This is the great paradox of this motorcycle, and what makes it so charming for initiates.

Its engine is the famous 1202 cm3 Evolution V-Twin, air-cooled. With 67 horsepower and 96 Nm of torque available from 3750 rpm, the figures seem modest compared to a modern Japanese twin-cylinder. But that's precisely where the magic lies, or the trap, depending on your point of view. Power is not the objective. What's important is this low- and mid-range surge, this sensual vibration that rises through the steel frame, this deep and unique sound that even the original exhaust cannot completely stifle. It's a living mechanism, the opposite of aseptic perfection. The belt drive, smooth and silent, and the five-speed gearbox, precise in its characteristic clunk-clunk, complete this pure sensory experience.
Harley has brought in some welcome updates to this generation. ABS is finally standard, an obvious feature at this price, coupled with a 300 mm front disc. A real gain in safety, even if braking remains more progressive than explosive, in the image of the motorcycle. The keyless start system and LED rear lights modernize the whole without betraying the style. And this style, just so, is worked: chrome pull-back handlebar, classic headlight nacelle, bright engine casings, and this 17-liter tank with an iconic shape. With a seat height of 71 cm, it remains accessible, even if its weight of 265 kg when full is felt when stationary.
So, who is it for? Certainly not the track rider seeking performance or the novice intimidated by its weight and very specific handling. The Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom is a rolling cultural object, a purely emotional choice. It requires its rider to adopt its rhythm, to appreciate the journey more than the destination. With a price that hovered around 11,600 euros new, it positioned itself as an entry point into the Harley world, a status that the 2013 models or previous 2006 models already shared. Today, on the used market, it represents an opportunity to acquire this raw mechanical experience. It is an imperfect, demanding motorcycle, but with a character that few competitors, even more technical ones, can claim. You either love it or hate it, but it never leaves you indifferent.
