Overview
What does a true Harley-Davidson custom mean to you? A longer wheelbase, a 21-inch front wheel, and a high handlebar? For Milwaukee engineers in 2011, the answer was elsewhere, lower, more muscular, more grounded. The Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom of that era, which can be found on the used market for prices ranging from around €7,000 to €9,000 depending on condition and year, embraces a radical approach. The high front end was traded for a fork inclined at 30 degrees and a 16-inch front wheel, dressed with a wide 130 tire. The result is an aggressive, almost battered stance that gives the impression that the motorcycle wants to dig into the asphalt rather than glide over it.

Underneath this new suit, the heart remains steadfastly a 1202 cm3 Evolution V-Twin, air-cooled. With 75 horsepower, we are far from the figures of Japanese roadsters, but the argument lies elsewhere, in this torque of 98 Nm available from 3200 rpm. It is there that the engine breathes, growls, and propels this 260 kg fully fueled with a quiet authority. The five-speed gearbox, paired with a belt drive, delivers smooth and sonorous mechanics, typical of the brand. On the road, the 2012 Sportster 1200 Custom displays a top speed of approximately 175 km/h, but its kingdom is that of national roads and curves taken with that characteristic rumble.
Compared to its cousins, such as the more neutral Sportster 1200 Nightster, the Custom plays the card of raw attitude. The pull-back handlebar brought back towards the rider, the forward controls, and the low 71 cm seat make it an accessible machine, ideal for the urban rider or the traveler seeking a relaxed position for long rides. However, this compromise comes at a price. The suspension, with its adjustable but basic rear shocks, may show its limits on cobblestones or degraded roads, and the 17-liter tank, although more generous than on older generations, requires regular stops.
So, who is ready to shell out the original new price, around €10,945, or to hunt down a good used model today? This is not a motorcycle for those seeking pure performance or the latest technology. It is a mechanical object, full of character, that requires to be tamed and personalized. Between a 2006 version, more classic, and a Harley-Davidson XL Sportster 1200 Custom CA 2015, more refined in certain details, the 2012 occupies a pivotal position. It offers the raw charm of the custom with touches of modernity, such as its LED rear light or electronic fuel injection. It does not claim to be perfect, but it is authentically Harley. And for many, that is the essence.
