Overview
Can a motorcycle be both an immutable archetype and a canvas for infinite customization? The 2015 Sportster 1200 Custom CB plays precisely on this dual register, this tension between sacred heritage and the desire to stand out in a bar parking lot. Here, there is no technical revolution; the heart still beats to the rhythm of the Evo, this 45-degree V-twin of 1202 cm3 that delivers 75 horsepower and a meaty torque of 96 Nm from 3750 rpm. Figures that do not shake Japanese spec sheets, but tell another story: a frank, sonorous, and accessible surge, perfectly matched to a precise five-speed gearbox, even if a sixth would be welcome on the road.

The difference with a standard Custom? It is measured in centimeters and in philosophy. The CB’s mini Ape-Hanger handlebar changes everything. It redesigns the posture, arms a little higher, shoulders back, for a resolutely custom, almost bobber look. Combined with a low seat at 71 cm, it offers a relaxed seating position, but requires some adjustments in tight turns, counter-steering becoming a little less instinctive. The advertised weight of 265 kg fully fueled is felt at low speed, but once underway, the beast regains that reassuring stability typical of Harleys. Braking, with its two simple discs, does the job without extravagance, provided you anticipate.
The true signature of this CB edition is its dark trim. Black Denim, a deep matte black, floods rims, engine casings, and fairings, creating a sober and modern silhouette. Fortunately, a few strategic chrome accents – on the handlebars, exhaust outlets – break up the monotony and recall the codes of the house. In 2015, a touch of “Charcoal Pearl” softens the appearance slightly, adding a nuance under certain lighting. It is a motorcycle that embraces its "bad guy" side, far from the sparkling chrome of mass-market models.
Who is it for? For those who want an authentic Harley, with a raw and mechanical character, without breaking the bank on a Softail or a Dyna. The price of 11,790 euros at the time made it a serious entry point into the world of American customs. It is the ideal mount for the uninhibited urban dweller who prefers attitude to the stopwatch, and for the Sunday globetrotter who travels the departmental roads for the pleasure of the sound and sensation, without worrying about the 17-liter tank that requires regular stops. Faced with a Yamaha Bolt or an Indian Scout of the time, more lively and lighter, the Sportster CB relies on aura, easy customization, and that feeling of belonging to a tribe. It is not the most performant, nor the most agile, but it has that soul that, for many, is priceless.
