Overview
What does a Sportster look like when you want to give it a darker, more urban, almost rebellious character? In 2013, Harley-Davidson answers with this XL Sportster 1200 Custom CB, a version that plays the card of matte and minimalism. The principle is simple: take the classic 1200 Custom, already well-established in cruiser culture, and apply a desaturation treatment. The Black Denim, this matte black hue that covers the frame, spoked wheels, engine casings, and a large part of the bodywork, imposes a discreet but massive presence. It’s not a completely black motorcycle, fortunately; a few chrome elements, such as the valve covers or intake scoops, break up the monotony with a welcome contrast. The aesthetics are less flashy, more contemporary, and it works.

But the change is not limited to pigment. Harley also modified the ergonomics with a mini Ape-Hanger handlebar, higher and closer, which redesigns the rider's posture. You go from a relaxed seating position to a slightly more engaged, almost aggressive attitude. This simple evolution radically transforms the perception of the motorcycle, both in terms of looks and feel. At a standstill, it appears more compact, more nervous; in motion, it forces you to hold yourself differently, with your arms slightly raised. It’s no longer the relaxed cruiser for long distances, but a machine that is more suited to the city, short trips with friends, and the expression of a personal style. For chrome purists, this may seem like a betrayal, but for a new generation of riders, it is a coherent proposition.
Technically, it remains faithful to the Sportster we have known for years. The 1202 cm³ Evolution engine, a 45° V-twin, delivers 75 horsepower at 6000 rpm and a torque of 98 Nm from 3200 rpm. These figures are not impressive on paper, but they correspond to the real use of such a motorcycle: a frank propulsion from the first turns, a deep and regular sound, a mechanism that does not seek absolute performance but sensation. With a wet weight of 260 kg and a seat height of 710 mm, it remains accessible to a wide public, even beginners who want to enter the Harley world without drowning in complexity. The five-speed gearbox, the belt drive, the braking with a 292 mm disc at the front and a 260 mm disc at the rear, all of this is routine, predictable, but effective in its domain.
Compared to its competitors in the mid-size cruiser segment, such as certain Yamahas or Suzukis, the Sportster 1200 Custom CB stands out for its stronger cultural identity rather than its technical prowess. It won’t go faster, brake harder, or be lighter. But it offers an aura, a history, and this ability to transform into a fashion accessory as much as a vehicle. At 11,190 euros at the time, it positioned itself as a stylish option in the range, for those who wanted a Harley that was less ostentatious, more discreet but still recognizable.
Ultimately, this CB version is a declaration of voluntary simplicity. It proves that the Sportster, often considered a timeless base, can still reinvent itself with subtle modifications. You change a handlebar, you apply a matte color, and the driving philosophy alters. It’s not a mechanical revolution, but an evolution of character. For the urban rider looking for a presence without flamboyance, or for the cruiser enthusiast who wants to get out of the chrome trails, it represented a relevant alternative. A motorcycle that doesn’t make noise with its power, but with its attitude.
