Overview
Who would have bet, just a few years ago, that a Sportster could inspire so many variations? Yet, the proof is there, before our eyes, with this 2017 XL 1200 Custom CB. It takes the proven base of the Custom, that 1202 cm3 V-Twin which spits out its visceral torque of 96 Nm from 3500 rpm, and applies a radical, almost sectarian aesthetic formula. The sparkling chrome is gone, make way for Black Denim, a matte black that dresses the rims, casings and fairing with remarkable consistency. Only a few details, such as the brake calipers or trim, break the monotony of this dark hue, offering a subtle contrast for those who find total black a little too absolute.

But the real change, the one that is felt as soon as you straddle the beast, is this mini Ape-Hanger handlebar. It is not as extreme as those of pure customs, but it imposes a high arms, straight back position, which completely transforms the ergonomics. You are far from the slightly forward-leaning posture of the classic Custom. Here, you stand prominently, on parade. This modifies the feel at low speed and in the city, giving a feeling of domination over traffic, but it also weighs down the maneuvers of a machine that already weighs 268 kg with full tanks. You have to get used to it, it's a style that is paid for in muscular effort.
On the road, the Evolution engine remains the central element of the experience. With its 68 horsepower, it does not seek pure performance, leaving that to the Japanese or European sportbikes. Its role is different: it delivers a locomotive thrust, deep and sonorous, which propels the motorcycle with a nonchalant authority. The five-speed gearbox, precise in its Harley-Davidson style, and the belt drive ensure smooth progress. You swallow the kilometers without haste, contenting yourself with this comfortable cruising speed, well below the theoretical 175 km/h. The rather basic suspension and the two-disc braking system provide service without frills. It is sufficient for relaxed riding, but you feel the limits of the double cradle frame as soon as you want to tighten the pace a little.
So, who rides this Custom CB? Clearly for the urban customizer who already has some experience. A beginner might be intimidated by the weight and the particular position. It is a motorcycle for those who first and foremost seek a defined style, a presence on the street, and who accept the compromises that this implies in terms of agility and dynamic comfort. At more than 12,000 euros new, it was not cheap, but it offered a credible and factory alternative for dark custom enthusiasts, without having to go through the aftermarket accessories and paint box. It proved that Harley-Davidson still knew how to surf on the codes it created, by offering a machine with a well-tempered character, far from any uniformity. A personality in its own right within the large Sportster family.
