Overview

1998, that’s the year France won its first World Cup, when Pinochet ended up in jail, when Titanic was a blockbuster... and in Milwaukee, it was the arrival of its spectacular Road Glide. An imposing, heavy touring bagger, equipped with a very particular front fork, the famous “Shark Nose.” Today, we can’s imagine the Harley range without this model.

Another revolution arrived in 2023. The company shook its microcosm by presenting a CVO Road Glide bearing the new identity of this FLTR family. The shock, with a total and futuristic facelift of this face. The Shark Nose adopts the look of a stealth spaceship, while reducing turbulence by an average of 60%.

Just a little time to get the public accustomed... Now, the Road Glide can move down the range and thus offer its services to a wider clientele. But even jumping from the Custom Vehicle Operations case to the standard models, the Road Glide has what it takes to impress its world.

Starting with the engine. It wants a huge twin, with so much fat and strength that a sumo would envy this excess. So, its creators installed the 117 version of the M8 engine, almost the same as that of the recent Road Glide ST. 1923 cm3 of America and indulgence, with 17.8 mkg of torque at 3,500 rpm. Power reaches a peak of 107 horsepower at 5,020 rpm. But the desire to seek this maximum will soon be overshadowed by the benefit of generous mid-range muscle. Since the ST, the Road Glide has gained 4 horsepower and 7 Nm. The gap is even more impressive since the Road Glide Special and its 114 ci: 14 hp and 17 Nm. Enough to produce quite a bit of heat too. That’s why Harley opted to install liquid cooling on the cylinder heads.

This decade is the one where H-D Touring models discovered driving assistance. The new Road Glide carries everything the brand can offer: 4 Riding Modes (Road / Sport / Rain / Custom), tire pressure monitoring, hill hold assist, and cornering management of ABS, traction control, front / rear linked braking and residual torque control (anti-dribble by engine torque management).

Next, the new generation of Street Glide / Road Glide introduced the new Skyline infotainment system. As with the engine, we're in the big leagues. It starts with a huge 12.3-inch color TFT screen, touchscreen, as wide as a toaster, replacing all the dashboard gauges in favor of a richer and more modern interface, but which purists will find more "cold." With Skyline, the rider can escape from the melody of the "Big Block" to trace a route with the GPS, make a phone call, listen to the radio or their playlists via a sound system consisting of a 200-watt amplifier and two 50-watt speakers, connect their smartphone and / or USB key, chat with the passenger via intercom or simply let the virtual needles fly. How far we've come from the radio-cassette of the first Road Glide.

Harley-Davidson has also retouched some elements, in a less spectacular way: the tank, its central console, the height of the handlebars, the rear lights, the seat and the saddlebags – they will allow you to carry 69 liters of odds and ends. More determined than ever to cross the states of Uncle Sam, the 117 Road Glide sees only its sister Street Glide as a competitor, almost the same price and same equipment, with only the face that changes.
