Overview
It’s a rather strange concept: making a sportbike out of an Indian Chief! Perhaps a moment of obsessive wandering by the brand's engineers...? Or the American way of thinking...? Let’s be cynical for a paragraph, mentioning that Americans compete with 300 kg baggers powered by engines with a yield of 70 hp/liter; while Europeans use 200 kg hypersport bikes with 220 hp engines.
That’s done! Let’s now take a step back and see why a large cruiser like the Chief wants to get into sports. It’s not a question of fitness or a vindictive temperament. It’s about offering a more dynamic, almost more nervous, behavior by modifying the chassis of this large custom. Indian could have been content with a purely marketing approach by grafting on just a fork head and some fashionable paint. But no, this Chief really wants to move things.
By raiding the workshop and taking the fork from the Challenger models. As a result, the Sport Chief features a KYB inverted fork with 43 mm tubes. Regarding braking, we go from night to day: the Chiefs are limited to a single 300 mm disc for the front to calm three quintals / the Sport version more than doubles the bet with a pair of 320 mm discs, bitten by Brembo radial calipers, reference M4.32. Thanks to new Fox rear shock absorbers of better quality, the rear end appears more accommodating. Especially with a 100 mm stroke – it’s not super yet but it gives the suspension more room to work, and the steering angle takes the opportunity to tighten to 28°. Now, we realize that the native of Springfield wants to show her conviction in corners.
Show, not attack like squirrels. The machine remains a custom, with limited lean angles, a permanent excess weight and wrestler-like dimensions. Which would be quite appropriate on this machine. The riding position is worthy of a power-cruiser: new open handlebars raise the handlebar by 152 mm, the thicker saddle installs you as in a catapult and the position of the footpegs (unchanged) locks your feet in the center of the engine. Everything is the opposite of a streetfighter like a V4, where the rider is ready for attack. On the Sport Chief, it is destined for a muscular ride, full of growling.
The qualifier sport has not reached the engine. You’re almost led to believe that the 116 Thunderstroke doesn’t care at all about the dictates of pure performance. Its thing is emotion, visual vociferation and abundant torque in every piston stroke. Peak torque exceeds 16 mkg at 3,200 rpm – and you’re already in the upper mid-range. With almost 1.9 liters of displacement in the belly, the twin can give heart to the work and enough to make your heart take off; without reaching missile speeds.
This Indian leaves quite a bit of freedom to its rider. No traction control, anti-wheeling or trajectory control – which is what we all expect. Electronics are limited to three engine maps, LEDs everywhere it lights up, an ABS... and also keyless start, a USB port, cruise control and a circular color TFT screen of 10 cm. The Ride Command software embedded in it allows you to take the pulse of the bike, pilot the phone and music, and have a GPS navigator. Ultimately, the Sport Chief is quite well-equipped.
So, and let’s be clear, the 1890 Sport Chief is nothing like a sportbike, a gritty roadster or a bike with sharp claws. It’s a more incisive orientation of the standard Chief, without seeking to provoke.
