What drives Harley-Davidson to blow up its own styling codes? With the 2018 Fat Bob FXFBS, the Milwaukee firm puts a muscular custom on the table that turns its back on the house's classic lines. Dual-lens headlight, massive inverted fork, wide 16-inch tires: the silhouette looks more like an American streetfighter than a traditional cruiser. The message is clear. This new-generation Softail wants to attract a different crowd — those who want character without necessarily ticking every box of the Harley heritage.

Beneath this bruiser's bodywork beats the Milwaukee Eight 114, a 45° V-twin displacing 1868 cc that delivers 94 horsepower at 5020 rpm and, more importantly, 154.9 Nm of torque from just 3000 rpm. That's the figure that matters on a machine like this. The torque, available low in the rev range, turns every roll-on into a blunt, visceral shove. The 102 mm bore pistons churn through their 114.3 mm stroke with a conviction the old Twin Cam could never offer. Compared to the base-spec Milwaukee Eight 107 at 1745 cc, the extra displacement translates into a surplus of muscle that's immediately noticeable. The 114 fits the bike's aggressive temperament like a thick leather glove.
The chassis has also undergone a change in philosophy. The steel double-cradle frame now houses a mono-shock hidden beneath the seat, replacing the old Softails' disguised hardtail setup. The inverted fork up front brings a serious gain in rigidity and steering precision. Granted, we're not talking about a European roadster here: at 306 kg wet on the scales, the Fat Bob remains a heavyweight that demands anticipation through tight sequences. But on sweeping curves and in a straight line, stability is a genuine strong point. Braking duties fall to twin 300 mm front discs clamped by four-piston calipers, and they get the job done — even if stopping power could use one more notch given the mass involved.

On the daily-use front, the seat height of 710 mm reassures shorter riders, but the mere 13.6-liter tank seriously limits range. On a machine that tops out at 175 km/h and favors spirited cruising, frequent fuel stops will be part of the program. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox work flawlessly, with crisp shifts that suit the direct character of the package. Up against the lighter Indian Scout Bobber or the slimmer Triumph Bonneville Bobber, the Fat Bob plays the card of unapologetic excess. It's bigger, pricier at €19,660, and more radical in its aesthetic stance.

That's precisely what makes it both strong and limited. The Harley-Davidson Fat Bob 114 is aimed at those who want a high-personality urban custom, capable of blasting between traffic lights and turning heads in a parking lot. Long-distance touring and versatility are not its playground. But for city riding and muscular weekend blasts, this new-wave Softail delivers on its promise with a mechanical honesty that many sanitized customs sorely lack.
