Overview

When Bologna decides to push the cursor to the limit, it gives the Ducati Monster 1200 R: a naked bike that wasn't designed to please everyone, but to satisfy those who know exactly what they are looking for. And what they are looking for is raw character, serious horsepower, and a mechanical feel that doesn't compromise.

Ducati Monster 1200 R

The Testastretta 11° V-twin of 1198 cm³ receives here a privileged treatment: bore increased to 106 mm, compression ratio at 13:1, 56 mm injection bodies. Result: 152 horsepower at 9250 rpm and 125 Nm at 7750 rpm according to the measurement cycle in force since the end of 2017. These figures clearly place the Ducati Monster 1200 R technical specifications in the hypernaked camp, facing the KTM Super Duke R or the BMW S 1000 R. The Italian twin does not have the linear sound of German or Austrian four-cylinder engines; it pulses, it vibrates, it dialogues with the rider in a way that overly smooth engines no longer know how to do.

The geometry has been revised to seek greater agility: chassis raised by 15 mm at both ends, seat at 830 mm which filters short statures, wheelbase contained at 1509 mm. The rolling chassis follows the sporty logic with a 43 mm fully adjustable Kayaba fork and a single-sided Sachs linkage monoshock. The 120/70-17 front and 190/55-17 rear tires find their grip on a track-oriented profile. Braking uses Brembo radial four-piston calipers on 330 mm discs, all topped by Bosch ABS. Nothing to criticize about the quality of the components; they correspond exactly to the premium positioning of the machine.

At 180 kg dry for 207 kg in running order, the Monster 1200 R in black or in any other finish remains within reasonable proportions for the displacement. Forged Marchesini rims contribute to the reduction of unsprung masses, with some carbon-dressed parts completing the weight reduction. The onboard electronics are up to the task: three riding modes, traction control with eight levels of sensitivity, TFT dashboard. Electronic management does not seek to erase the character of the engine; it provides a safety net without sterilizing sensations, which is exactly what is expected on this type of machine.

The catalog price of 18,840 euros at launch places the Ducati Monster 1200 R price in a high range that not all budgets will validate. Those looking for a Ducati Monster 1200 R used will find vintages between 2016 and 2021 on the used market, the differences from one year to the next being minor on the mechanical level. Owners are inclined to turn to Termignoni or Spark exhaust lines to release the sound of the twin and gain a few extra horsepower: it is a comprehensible reflex on a motorcycle that already invites so much personalization. This Monster is aimed at an experienced rider, comfortable with a demanding motorcycle and not inclined to road compromise. Touring, that's not its register. Attack of passes or circuit, yes.
