Overview
When we talk about an icon, we tend to forget that its status wasn't built on frills. In 1993, Ducati delivered a punch to the roadster market with the 900 Monster, a raw, stripped-down motorcycle that would redefine the segment's aesthetics for thirty years. Twenty-five years later, in 2018, the Bolognese firm celebrates this anniversary with a special series that doesn't do things by halves. The Monster 1200 25 Anniversario is the culmination of a cult, a roadster dressed for the party but with nothing lost of its bite.

Beneath its parade tricolor attire, a direct nod to the S4Rs of 2008, this limited edition hides a lightning-fast mechanical heart. The 1198 cm3 Testastretta twin-cylinder, an interceptor compared to the original carb engine, delivers 147 horsepower at 9250 rpm. Torque, meanwhile, awakens earlier with 124 Nm, enough to get the message across as soon as the wrist turns. With a dry weight announced at 184 kilograms, we are in ratios that border on pure sport. It's not a gentle roadster; it's a machine that demands respect, especially when you know that its 190 horsepower per liter can transform into brutal acceleration.
The chassis is signed for the track, or almost. The 48 mm Öhlins inverted fork and the mono-shock of the same brand offer a standard setting suitable for a muscular ride. The brakes, Brembo M50 calipers biting on 320 mm discs at the front, inspire absolute confidence. Ducati has even slipped in forged gold-colored Marchesini rims, a detail that shines as much as it reduces unsprung mass. This is far from simple cosmetic dressing. It's a factory preparation, a roadster that winks at sportbikes while retaining relatively accessible ergonomics, with a saddle at 795 mm.
But at nearly 20,000 euros, who are we really riding for? This price places the 25 Anniversario in a very narrow niche, facing competitors such as the MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR or even the Triumph Speed Triple RS, which offer thrilling sensations for a few thousand euros less. The buyer here is not rational. He is a collector, a passionate fan of the brand for whom the serial number engraved on the plate and the "25°" embroidery on the saddle are worth the supplement. It's a desirable object, a flamboyant tribute more than a motorcycle for everyday use.
Ultimately, this special Monster sums up the journey of the range in itself. It has retained the raw soul of the first model, that bare trellis frame and aggressive posture, while incorporating the electronics and power of a modern machine. Is it superfluous? Probably. Enchanting? Absolutely. It no longer revolutionizes the segment as it did in 1993, but it proves that the Italian roadster, even in evening wear, can still show its teeth.
