Overview
The Ducati Hypermotard is a consenting adult toy; its 939 SP version is a demanding adult toy. No more powerful, but better equipped, more sporty, higher, with better suspension, the machine lives up to its racing livery. Press the starter and the show begins.
The Hypermotard SP evolves in line with the standard model and thus receives the improvements to the 937 cm3 twin. A few extra horsepower, a lot more torque, and for a bit of fun, you'll find a series of bonuses here dedicated to a more precise control of the machine. At the forefront is Öhlins. The previous SP, in 821 form, only had the signed shock absorber from the Swedish manufacturer. Becoming a 939, the Hypermotard SP gains a gold 50 mm diameter fork. Fully adjustable, it will allow more efficiency and feel on spirited rides. Braking also improves with a Brembo radial master cylinder, complemented by a 5-position adjustable lever. The Bosch ABS and equipment do not change compared to the standard HM: 320 mm discs, Brembo M4-32 radial monoblock calipers, Bosch 9MP unit with 2 levels of intervention + off.
With increased suspension travel (front: 185 mm, +15 mm – rear: 175 mm, +25 mm), the SP offers more ground clearance but also a higher seat height. The seat, here with a more grippy covering, has a height of 890 mm. Truly worthy of a Supermotard. As an option, it can be lowered by 20 mm. Dynamically, the machine will gain in responsiveness with forged aluminum Marchesini rims, featuring the same design as those of the 1299 Panigale S, lighter, and shod with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires. And also through its diet. Three kilos have disappeared, mainly thanks to the rims but also thanks to a small selection of carbon fiber parts, such as the front mudguard and belt guards. Note the magnesium cylinder head covers. A little more fun on the electronics side. Like the entire Hypermotard family, the SP incorporates three riding modes in its engine management. They have been recalibrated here to make it more sporty.
RACE: The Race riding mode delivers 113 hp with an instantaneous response from the RbW (Ride-by-Wire) to throttle opening, minimal intervention from the traction control system (DTC), and level 1 of ABS system efficiency applied only to the front and without rear lift control.
SPORT: The Sport riding mode delivers 113 hp with a more progressive response from the RbW to throttle opening, medium-intensity intervention from the DTC, and level 2 of ABS system braking efficiency with reduced rear lift control.
WET: The Wet riding mode delivers 75 hp with a progressive response from the RbW to throttle opening, maximum-threshold intervention from the DTC, and level 3 of ABS system braking efficiency with maximum stability during braking and rear lift control.
Immediately identifiable with its Corse red and white color scheme and its promising full suspension, the 939 Hypermotard SP announces beautiful doses of adrenaline and formidable efficiency on winding roads, even more so when the virolos tighten and draw closer. The toy, however, demands a high price for its performance. The price is at the level of an older-generation hypersport; barely less than a 959 Panigale but as much as the ex CBR 1000 or GSX-R. Machines that will have trouble following the Hypermotard 939 SP on a mountain road.
