Overview
When Ducati decides to take its standard Hypermotard and graft on the DNA of a true competition supermotard, it gives rise to the Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP. Not an extreme version, no. A honed machine, where every component has been chosen to serve the rider rather than the marketing catalog.

The 937 cm3 V-twin produces 113 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 97.7 Nm of torque at 7500 rpm. These figures don't tell the whole story. This Ducati twin has a character all its own, a way of revving up with insistence, pushing hard from the middle of the range, and demanding the right hand. Compared to the 821 SP that preceded it, the increased displacement is especially noticeable in acceleration, where the engine erases false flats without being asked. The total weight of 201 kg, 178 kg dry, remains within reasonable limits for the category, especially since the forged aluminum Marchesini rims, directly borrowed from the 1299 Panigale S, noticeably lighten the unsprung masses.
The real difference between this SP version and the base model lies in the quality of the rolling chassis. The fully adjustable Öhlins forks with a 48 mm diameter and 185 mm of travel radically change the game compared to the original dampers. The fully adjustable Öhlins rear mono-shock also works with a single-sided aluminum swingarm for 175 mm of travel. This generosity of suspension explains the high saddle height, fixed at 890 mm, which can be lowered by 20 mm as an option. It’s deliberate, it’s a supermotard, and smaller riders will have to adapt. The direct trade-off is a ground clearance that allows for serious lean angles, shod with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires. Tires that don't forgive a lack of commitment but that provide valuable information when you start to understand the machine.
The electronic management offers three engine maps. In Race mode, the 113 horsepower arrive unfiltered, the traction control intervenes little, the ABS only covers the front wheel and allows the rear to lift if the rider decides. In Sport mode, throttle response softens, the DTC is more involved. Wet mode reduces power to 75 horsepower and maximizes safety interventions. Three modes calibrated with consistency, without unnecessary gadgets. A radial Brembo brake with an adjustable five-position lever completes a package that clearly aims for committed riding rather than a Sunday stroll. The Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP test consistently confirms this on a winding road.
The price of 15,990 euros legitimately raises questions. This is the price of a previous generation hypersport, an ex-CBR 1000 RR or a GSX-R 1000 from a few seasons, machines that are faster on the track and more versatile on the highway. But none of these rivals will do what the Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP does on a tight, twisty mountain road. The large-displacement supermotard is a category apart, where the perceived lightness, the quick steering, and this growling engine transform every turn into a physical commitment. Direct competition is almost non-existent at this level of finish, which explains the bill in part. Looking for a used Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP allows you to come back around 10,000 to 12,000 euros depending on the mileage, which makes the offer much more digestible.
This machine is aimed at experienced riders, comfortable with the saddle height, capable of exploiting high-end suspensions and managing an engine that never lies about its intentions. For track riders looking for a road-going complement or mountain riding enthusiasts, the 2017 Ducati Hypermotard 939 SP remains a reference. Not perfect, not accessible to everyone, but as unique as few motorcycles know how to be.
