Overview

Imagine parking your 125 next to a renowned Italian sportbike. Passersby stop, look twice, search for the error. There isn't really one: the Mito borrows the styling codes of the big ones with a disconcerting confidence. Aggressive fairing, perimeter aluminum frame, 40 mm inverted fork, wide 150 mm rear tire. On paper and on the road, this Cagiva plays in a category above its displacement.

Cagiva 125 MITO EV

Under the fairing, the 124.63 cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine develops 36 horsepower at 12,000 rpm in its unrestricted version, with a torque of 22.9 Nm at 11,000 rpm. Figures that elicit a smile on a 125, except that they are real, and the 175 km/h announced as top speed are not marketing communication. The six-speed gearbox, introduced on the 2000 versions, allows you to exploit this rev range with surgical precision. The redesigned six-spoke rims, the airbox and the revised ignition unit complete a consistent evolution. All for 129 kg dry weight, which places the machine in a power-to-weight ratio that many larger displacement motorcycles struggle to achieve.

But here's the downside. In France, the legal restriction reduces power to 15 horsepower, and frustration sets in. The chassis is designed to bite into corners, the suspension demands rigor, the handling remains that of a miniature circuit bike. All that for power that doesn't follow. It's a bit like driving a Ferrari with a Renault Twingo engine: the dynamic sensations are there, but the energy is lacking to truly complement them. Faced with an Aprilia RS 125 or a Honda NSR 125 from the same era, the Mito has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of finish and chassis performance, but demands more in terms of mechanical attention.

Cagiva 125 MITO EV

And that's where the Cagiva reveals its deep nature: it's not a means of transport, it's a passion object, almost a precision instrument. The two-stroke demands regular and serious maintenance. The risk of engine seizure looms constantly if monitoring is neglected. At 5,795 euros, its price dangerously approaches that of certain 500 cm³ models of the time, which clearly places it in the category of purchases considered only for convinced enthusiasts. It's not a motorcycle for a beginner looking for simplicity, nor for the hurried commuter. It's a machine for those who accept the contract: mechanical demand versus exceptional handling pleasure for the category. Who signs?
