Overview

Imagine a motor so large that it constitutes the architecture of the motorcycle itself. That is exactly what BMW offers with its R 18 Classic: a 1802 cm³ flat-twin engine that doesn't hide, that is exposed, that asserts every cubic centimeter as a statement of intent. For 2025, the machine is upgraded to Euro5+ standard and takes the opportunity to refine its front end, with a 19-inch wheel replacing the previous 16-inch. The visual result is immediate: the front of the beast gains elegance, the line lengthens, and the BMW R 18 Classic takes on even more American proportions than before.

BMW R 18 Classic

To talk about the BMW R 18 Classic without mentioning its torque would be a matter of poor taste. With the 2025 update, the engine gains an additional 5 Nm, peaking at 162.7 Nm available from 3000 rpm. The 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm may seem modest on paper compared to hypersport models, but in the bagger and cruiser world, traction is what matters, not the rev range. This boxer pulls like a well-bred tractor, and the exposed driveshaft that delivers power to the rear wheel is a rare mechanical curiosity on a mass-produced motorcycle. BMW embraces this singularity to the very end.

Facing a Harley-Davidson Road King or an Indian Chief Vintage, the BMW plays the German card: impeccable finish, developed electronics, and asserted versatility. The three riding modes Rain, Roll, and Rock structure the driver assistance offer, with ASC traction control and MSR engine torque control as standard. Cruise control is also included, which is a given for a machine designed to devour highway miles. Everything else, heated grips, cornering lights, keyless start, is purchased as an option. The list is long, and the bill can seriously exceed the base price of 23,206 euros.

BMW R 18 Classic

The bagger concept implies a certain pragmatism, and the Classic responds correctly to this use. The generous windshield effectively protects on the road, but it can be removed without tools for purists who want to feel the air. The side bags, approximately 15.5 liters each, are sufficient for a weekend; no more. The passenger seat can also be removed, transforming the machine into a solo cruiser without sacrificing the look. This is simple modularity that appeals to couples as much as to solitaires, to Sunday road warriors as much as to seasoned travelers. The 16-liter tank remains a point of attention on long stages.

BMW R 18 Classic

The 369 kilograms when fully fueled is no surprise in this category; a Harley Ultra Limited approaches the same figures. What is more surprising is the A2 compatibility: restricted to 35 kW, this colossal machine can fall into the hands of a young license holder. Seat height at 729 mm, 369 kilos to maneuver in underground parking lots, the context requires a certain physical maturity regardless of the legal age. For confirmed licenses, the R 18 Classic convinces on the highway and on clear secondary roads; it proves predictable, solid, reassuring even in its way of riding straight. Tight turns and urban maneuvers constitute another register, where the dimensions frankly impose themselves. It is a space machine, not a city machine.
