Overview
When Munich decides to tackle the American cruiser market, the result is unlike anything else in the segment. The BMW R 18 Classic is not a timid attempt to tick a commercial box. It's a statement of intent, built around an engine that could have come from the 1930s but runs with the precision of a contemporary Swiss watch.

The 1802 cm³ flat-twin engine is the centerpiece of the entire structure. With 157 Nm available from 3000 rpm, we're talking about torque that stretches the asphalt even before the engine speed climbs. The 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm almost seem secondary compared to this wall of low-end pull. Two 901 cm³ cylinders, a bore of 107 mm for a stroke of 100 mm, a compression ratio of 9.6:1: the figures tell of an engine designed for long effort, not for sprints. The shaft drive, visible and staged as a design element, completes this mechanical picture that has nothing to envy from the great American cruisers.
Where the base cruiser version plays the card of austerity, the BMW R 18 Classic takes on the role of a grand touring machine. The prominent windscreen cuts the wind, the side saddlebags absorb luggage, and the more generous seat installs the rider 691 mm above the ground. But BMW has had the intelligence to make everything removable. Windscreen, saddlebags, passenger seat: in a few minutes, the bagger transforms into a naked cruiser for those who prefer to swallow the kilometers with their face in the wind. This is a flexibility of use that neither the Harley-Davidson Road King nor the Indian Chief Vintage offer with as much ease.

The Classic weighs 365 kg in running order. Twenty kilograms more than its stripped-down sister, the price to pay for the touring equipment. On a sportbike, this figure would be prohibitive. In the world of baggers, it's simply normal, and the engine torque cancels out this mass with every acceleration. What is more striking is the attention to detail: the full-length exhaust pipes replace the short outlets of the base model, the headlight ramp integrates the turn signals to declutter the handlebar, and the 16-inch front wheel shod with a 130/90 gives the front end a formidable visual presence.

Electronically, BMW plays the card of consistency with three riding modes Rain, Roll and Rock, the ASC traction control, the MSR torque control and the cruise control as standard. The rest, from heated grips to keyless start to the reverse system, is part of the options catalog. At 25,450 euros, we are already on a high price, and the bill can quickly rise for those who want to personalize it further. This is the only real criticism to make: the BMW R 18 Classic 2023 remains a motorcycle for a comfortable traveler, not for the Sunday rider who is still hesitating between a Sportster and a Softail. That is not its clientele, and it does not seek to be.
