Overview
When Munich decides to play on the turf of Harley-Davidson and Indian, it doesn't go unnoticed. The BMW R 18 Classic doesn’t seek to seduce with subtlety: 365 kg on the scale, a flat-twin engine with a displacement of 1802 cm³, each cylinder swallowing 901 cm³ on its own, and a silhouette that openly claims the heritage of the American open road. The message is clear, the posture assumed.

What distinguishes the Classic version from the base cruiser is precisely the accumulation of details that transform a motorcycle into a machine for devouring miles. The large windscreen stands out prominently, essential as soon as you want to chain stages without arriving leached. But BMW has the intelligence to make it removable, as is the passenger seat and the side cases. The BMW R 18 Classic 2023 adapts to the mood: grand touring bike with luggage and protection, or stripped-down cruiser for a solo ride. The cases offer 15.5 liters each, which is enough for a well-organized weekend without claiming to compete with a true touring bike. The front headlight ramp also deserves attention, as it integrates the turn signals, freeing the handlebar from any visual clutter. The two exhaust pipes stretch towards the rear with an almost theatrical length. The 16-inch front wheel shod with a 130/90 B16 tire gives this feeling of frontal mass that belongs to the genre.
The engine is the main topic. 157.3 Nm of torque arrives as early as 3000 rpm, which is more than 16 mkg available almost permanently. The 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm almost seem anecdotal compared to this reserve of traction. On a highway, the Big Boxer block works at its idle speed, without ever forcing. The shaft drive, visible and well staged on this model, adds a touch of singularity in a segment where belts reign. Six gears, a maintenance-free final ratio, German reliability: the package will seduce those who want to ride far without worrying about settings.

The steel double cradle chassis invents nothing, and that's not the point. The fully faired 49 mm fork, the three 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the front and partial integral ABS manage the 365 kg with seriousness. The rear section with the hardtail appearance hides a discreet central shock absorber. BMW has also slipped three riding modes, Rain, Roll and Rock, an ASC traction control system, an MSR engine torque control system and a series cruise control. For the rest, the list of options is long: curve lighting, hill start control, electric reverse, heated grips, keyless start, Vance & Hines exhausts. As many boxes to check that can make the bill climb well beyond the initial displayed price of 23,990 euros.

Facing a Road King Special or a Chief Dark Horse, the R 18 Classic plays a different card than simple displacement or sound volume. The Bavarian finish, the exposed shaft as a mechanical jewelry piece, the possibility of derestricting it to 35 kW for A2 license holders: BMW voluntarily expands its audience without diluting the message. It is a motorcycle for travelers who want character forged in Munich, not for those seeking lightness or urban agility. It will not like narrow roads or city parking spaces, but on a clear national road, this flat-twin roars with a conviction that few European manufacturers can equal in this register.
