Overview
Imagine a 1802 cm3 boxer engine beating between your knees, two flat cylinders overflowing on either side of the frame like two fists ready to punch the asphalt. That's the first impression the BMW R 18 Classic leaves, and it doesn's dissipate. Munich had laid its foundations with the R18 cruiser, already an extraordinary machine. With the Classic, the brand pushes its pieces on a territory hitherto dominated by Milwaukee and Springfield: that of the long-distance bagger, that of the miles devoured standing up, that of the traveler who counts states rather than cities.

The bet is risky. BMW had already attempted this with the K 1600 B, a seductive machine but too techno, too European in spirit to convince aficionados of the genre. The BMW R 18 Classic plays a different score. The large, profiled windshield, the 15.5-liter rigid saddlebags on each side, the two exhaust pipes that shoot back like lances, everything here speaks the language of the American bagger. Except that the heart of the beast, it, is resolutely German. This twin boxer develops 157.3 Nm of torque from 3000 rpm, a figure that crushes everything the competition can field. The 91 horsepower at 4750 rpm almost seem anecdotal compared to this mountain of torque available from the low end of the range. Faced with an Indian Chief Vintage or a Harley-Davidson Road King, the difference in character is clear: the boxer imposes its physical signature, its calibrated vibrations, its binary rhythm that pulses in the footrests.
Modularity is designed for those who can't choose between travel and solo riding. The windshield can be removed, as can the saddlebags and the passenger seat. The 2023 BMW R 18 Classic also integrates a welcome evolution on the saddlebag supports, eliminating the tedious disassembly imposed by the previous year. This kind of detail, seemingly insignificant, counts when you regularly switch from one configuration to another. The seat height of 711 mm remains accessible, which is a performance for a machine displaying 365 kg fully fueled. The exposed cardan, visible under the mock-rigid rear hoop, is a rarity in current series production, a mechanical detail that delights the connoisseur's eye.

The chassis doesn't surprise: steel double cradle frame, 49 mm telescopic fork fully faired, three 300 mm discs with four-piston calipers at the front and partial integral ABS. BMW doesn't reinvent custom geometry, it refines it. Rain, Roll and Rock riding modes structure usage, traction control ASC and engine braking management MSR are standard. Cruise control is also standard, essential on the highway. On the other hand, cornering lights, heated grips or keyless start are options, and the list is long. At a base price of €23,990, the bill quickly rises to reach complete equipment.

The target audience is clearly identified: the confirmed globetrotter, rather mature, sensitive to history and mechanics, who is looking for an alternative to American references without renouncing the pleasure of large displacement. Compatibility with A2 after restriction to 35 kW theoretically opens the door to recent licenses, but honestly, 365 kg require solid experience before feeling comfortable with it. The BMW R 18 Classic is not a machine for the hurried urban dweller or the track rider who counts seconds. It is a tool designed to last, to disappear on a deserted national road, to exist where space is not lacking.
