Overview
There's something lighter about the R 18 Classic. Not in terms of its weight, but in its prow. Since its 2025 evolution, linked to the transition to Euro5+, the front end gains a certain finesse. This is due to the front wheel changing from 16 to 19 inches. Alongside this, the bagger has been somewhat revised, with reworked engine covers, a retouched light signature, the addition of a USB socket, and an in-depth engine overhaul. This gains 5 Nm of torque, totaling a maximum of 163 units. What a powerhouse!
The arrival of the R18 was not unnoticed. Neither was its engine. This enormous custom is now taking a more important, longer route. Adapted for highways, the R18 Classic version is targeting the heart of the American market and young license holders. This may be surprising, but BMW has estimated that the R18, cruiser or bagger, could be ridden by A2 license holders. From October 2021, it will be possible to restrict it to 35 kW.
The Bagger at BMW has been around for a while, with a derivative ersatz based on the K 1600: the B. Certainly more streamlined, but not really in the spirit of the Road King or the Chief Vintage. This time, the answer is in the segment’s canons, with a big twin, a desire to rack up miles, and a languid posture.
What immediately stands out is its large windshield. An essential element for those who want to cut through the road as much as possible. But, like the competition, BMW has thought about the pure riders, those eager for wind in their teeth. The windshield is thus removable. The same fate is planned for the passenger seat and the saddlebags. The R18 Classic can become a stripped-down cruiser at will. Solo at times; or with your lady and your belongings for a few hours or a few days. The capacity of the suitcases is limited, with 15.5 liters each - the 2022 model year brings a modification of the lower support of the saddlebags. No further disassembly is required to ride without the saddlebags. Confident, the motorcycle asserts its presence with two additional lights.
The formula seems too simple. Simplistically so, to present it as a new motorcycle when we have only added accessories. You have to approach the eye a little closer to highlight the particularities of the so-called Classic. I insist on the headlight ramp, as it also supports the turn signals. The handlebars and controls are relieved and streamlined. The seat also gains a dose of comfort with a thicker seat, leading to an increase in the seat height to 710 mm.
A piece here, a mod there, it ends up weighing. A Classic weighs 25 kg more than an R18, or 369 ready to ride. An M 1000 RR would laugh at that... except in the clan of cruisers, baggers, tourers and weight-killing machines, you assert your presence and your rank with plenty of steel. In any case, the engine has so much torque that it would lift another quintal without effort.
This block is the manufacturer's pride, the R18 family's, the heritage of decades. With a displacement of 901 cm3... per cylinder, it serves as both a power unit, an identity, and a character expression. We have more than 15 mkg readily available. A much more important force than the announced horsepower. But we're telling you anyway: 91 hp at 4,750 rpm. For more details, we have everything you need over there -> Another mechanical strong point is the transmission. It's a delight to observe the exposed cardan shaft, a unique case in series motorcycle production.
The Big Boxer is identical on the cruiser and the bagger. Same goes for the chassis, with a very classic design with its steel double cradle frame. The faux Hardtail rear section adds to the look while retaining the R18 specs: three 300 mm brake discs, four-piston calipers at the front, a large 49 mm fully-faired fork, a steering damper and the indispensable dose of electronic chips.
To command the three Riding Modes on board, named Rain, Roll and Rock. The latter bears its name with a marked fan. ASC is standard as well as the engine torque control MSR. The cruise control is also included but for everything else, you have to dive into the options. The choice is vast: integrated curve lighting in the main headlight, hill start assist, reverse system, heated grips, keyless start – and also accessories more in line with this type of machine: double branch selector, wide footpegs, Vance & Hines exhausts, etc.
The BMW R18 Classic advances the manufacturer's positions in the custom territory. Targeting travelers, especially American ones, it will stand out not by the size of its engine but by the arrangement of the cylinders, by the German finish, by certain originality, by its worked character. A machine that won’t like to feel cramped.
