Overview
When BMW decided to bump its venerable flat-twin from 1170 to 1254 cc, nobody expected a revolution. And yet, the BMW R 1250 R 2022 shifted up a gear. The Boxer, born in the 90s under the hood of the R 1100 R, has absorbed a quarter-century of evolution to reach a level of maturity that commands respect. The ShiftCam technology, with its two cam profiles on the intake camshaft, transforms the character of the flat-twin. The result: 136 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and, more importantly, 143 Nm of torque from just 6,250 rpm, with remarkable availability between 2,000 and 8,250 rpm. For a roadster in this category, it's a muscular temperament without being brutal. Against a more high-strung Ducati Monster 1200 or a frankly excessive Kawasaki Z H2, the BMW R 1250 R plays the card of quiet efficiency. The flat-twin doesn't scream—it pushes. Hard. And the six-speed shaft drive reinforces the impression of a machine built to eat up miles without breaking a sweat, with fuel consumption measured at 4.7 liters per hundred kilometers.

On the chassis side, the BMW R 1250 R spec sheet carries over the architecture introduced in 2015 on the 1200. A two-piece tubular steel frame, stressed-member engine, 45 mm inverted fork inherited from the S 1000 R, and a single-sided Paralever swingarm. The radial four-piston Brembo brakes on 320 mm discs inspire confidence, and the standard ABS can no longer be deactivated. At 239 kg wet, this BMW R 1250 R remains the lightest in the R family, even though it carries eight kilos more than its predecessor. The 1,515 mm wheelbase, fifteen millimeters shorter than the RS, gives it welcome urban agility. The 820 mm seat height will suit most rider builds without issue.
The onboard electronics deserve a closer look. As standard, the bike comes with two riding modes (Road and Rain), ASC traction control, and Hill Start Control. Those who want to go further will need to opt for the Dynamic package, charged as an extra, which unlocks the Dynamic and configurable Dynamic Pro modes, DTC traction control, ABS Pro cornering braking, and MSR engine brake control. A BMW R 1250 R test ride quickly reveals that the Dynamic package transforms the machine's personality. BMW stays true to its options strategy, and the price climbs quickly beyond the base 15,350 euros. The ESA Next Generation, a semi-active suspension that automatically adapts to load, represents an additional cost but delivers first-rate comfort on rough roads.

The 6.5-inch TFT dashboard, dubbed Connectivity, now comes as standard. Paired with a smartphone via the dedicated app, it offers navigation, phone calls, and music management. A selling point that will appeal to connected tourers, less so to purists attached to an analog gauge. Three trim levels dress the range: Basic in understated Black Storm, Exclusive with its gold accents on the calipers, and Style Sport in Motorsport colors for those who want to flaunt the sporty pedigree. On the BMW R 1250 R used market, the 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years can be found at attractive prices, often between 10,000 and 13,000 euros depending on equipment and mileage. The HP versions, more exclusive, hold their value better.

At its core, the BMW R 1250 R is aimed at the experienced rider looking for a roadster capable of doing everything without excelling in any single area. Not a track weapon, not a trail bike, not a cruiser. A Bavarian Swiss army knife, solid and well-finished, that only gets better with the BMW R 1250 R accessories available in the catalog. Its flat-twin remains an engine in a class of its own in the motorcycle landscape, with a sound and vibrations that neither a Japanese four-cylinder nor an Italian twin can replicate. For those willing to play the options game, it's one of the most accomplished big-bore roadsters on the market. For those who won't, the base price remains fair against a Triumph Speed Triple or an Aprilia Tuono. The BMW R 1250 R test confirms the obvious: Munich knows how to build mature motorcycles, designed to last, and this R is no exception to the rule.
