Overview
When BMW released the S 1000 R, the message was clear: raw power, adrenaline, end of story. But not every rider is looking to scare themselves at the first roundabout. For those who want character without the slap in the face, Munich kept a far more subtle card up its sleeve. The BMW R 1250 R, introduced in 2019, descends from a lineage of flat-twin roadsters stretching back to the 1990s. From the R 1100 R to the R 1200 R, the flat-twin matured without ever betraying its DNA. This 1250 generation is its most refined form.

Beneath the rocker covers, the 1254 cc Boxer engine adopts the ShiftCam variable valve timing system, which switches the intake camshaft between two profiles depending on engine speed. The concrete result: 136 horsepower at 7750 rpm and, more importantly, 143 Nm of torque from just 6250 rpm, with strong availability from 2000 rpm onward. It's no power monster compared to a Ducati Monster 1200 S or a KTM 1290 Super Duke R, but that's not the point. The flat-twin plays the smoothness card, delivering clean acceleration and a mechanical rumble that accompanies you without ever becoming aggressive. On a BMW R 1250 R test ride, the first impression always surprises with how easy it is to modulate power in everyday riding. Fuel consumption held to 4.7 liters per hundred kilometers, combined with the 25-liter tank, provides comfortable range for weekend rides.
On the chassis side, don't look for a revolution compared to the 1200. The two-piece tubular steel frame with the engine as a stressed member carries over the same architecture. The 45 mm inverted fork, borrowed from the S 1000 R since the 2015 overhaul, replaces the historic Telelever. At the rear, the Paralever shaft drive handles final transmission. The radial-mounted four-piston Brembo calipers on 320 mm discs inspire confidence from the very first braking. At 239 kg wet, the 2019 BMW R 1250 R remains the lightest in its family, even though it gained eight kilos over its predecessor. The 820 mm seat height accommodates most body types without difficulty.

The electronics take a leap forward. As standard, the R offers two riding modes, Road and Rain, ASC traction control, hill start assist, and ABS. The Dynamic package, available as an option on top of the base price of 14,600 euros, unlocks Dynamic and configurable Dynamic Pro modes, DTC traction control, ABS Pro cornering brake assist, engine brake control, and a quickshifter. It also opens the door to the ESA Next Generation semi-active suspension, capable of automatically adapting to load. The 165 mm color TFT dashboard, with smartphone connectivity, becomes standard on this BMW R 1250 R spec sheet. Simplified navigation, music management, phone calls—it's all there. Round-gauge purists will cringe, but the gain in readability is real.

Three trim levels dress up the catalog. The Basic in Black Storm plays it understated, the Exclusive adds gold accents on the calipers and a grey frame, while the BMW R 1250 R HP sports the Motorsport livery, a white frame, and a beefier stainless steel belly pan. The BMW R 1250 R accessories catalog and the Option 719 line let you customize the machine to your liking. On the used BMW R 1250 R market, the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years still command strong prices, proof of the model's solid residual value. This roadster is aimed at the experienced rider looking for a BMW R 1250 R review that checks every box: city, open road, tight curves. A Bavarian Swiss army knife, without the bling of overpowered nakeds, but with an engine that ages like a fine diesel. Only better.
