Overview
When BMW launched the S 1000 R, the message was clear: here is our weapon to take on the overpowered nakeds. But for those who prefer an iron fist in a velvet glove, Munich kept another card up its sleeve. The BMW R 1250 R 2021 isn't looking for a head-on fight. It cultivates a more mature approach to the roadster art, rooted in a lineage that traces back to the R 1100 R of 1994. Twenty-seven years of air/liquid-cooled flat-twin — that forges character.

Beneath the valve covers, the 1254 cc flat-twin received the ShiftCam variable valve timing, and the results speak for themselves on the BMW R 1250 R spec sheet: 136 horsepower at 7750 rpm, 143 Nm of torque at 6250 rpm, with over 110 Nm available from just 2000 rpm. It's this generosity in the mid-range that sets the Boxer apart from the competition. Where a Ducati Monster 1200 or a Triumph Speed Triple bank on temperament, the BMW R 1250 R plays the smoothness card. ShiftCam allows the intake camshaft to switch between two profiles depending on engine speed, delivering both urban flexibility and strong acceleration on the open road. For the 2021 model year, the engine meets Euro5 standards without sacrificing a single horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheel through a six-speed gearbox and a Paralever shaft drive — a robust solution that spares long-distance tourers the chore of chain lubrication.
The chassis carries over from the former 1200, reworked in 2015 when BMW swapped the historic Telelever for a 45 mm inverted fork. Good call. The two-piece tubular steel frame uses the engine as a stressed member, the single-sided aluminum swingarm works with the Paralever system, and the radial-mount four-piston Brembo calipers on 320 mm discs deliver serious stopping power. At 239 kg wet and with a 1515 mm wheelbase, the BMW R 1250 R remains the lightest in the R family, even though it carries eight kilos more than its predecessor. A 15-liter tank and a claimed consumption of 4.7 l/100 km provide decent range without being generous. Those who devour miles will wish they had the RT's tank.

On the electronics front, as BMW tradition dictates, standard equipment includes ASC traction control, Hill Start Control, and ABS. The optional Dynamic package unlocks Pro riding modes, DTC traction control, cornering ABS Pro, and the quickshifter. The 6.5-inch TFT display is now standard, with smartphone connectivity for navigation and music. It's comprehensive, perhaps even too segmented for some who will find Munich's options policy irritating. The BMW R 1250 R price starts at 15,100 euros for the Basic version, and the bill climbs quickly with the packages. On the used market, 2019 and 2020 BMW R 1250 R models are starting to appear at softer prices, making them worth a test ride for anyone torn between new and second-hand. BMW R 1250 R accessories are plentiful too, from engine guards to panniers to the ESA Next Generation semi-active suspension.

In the saddle, the R 1250 R is aimed at the experienced rider who wants a brawny roadster without the edginess of a streetfighter. It cruises at 200 km/h without breaking a sweat, carves through corners with poise thanks to its 820 mm seat height and well-placed center of gravity. Up against a Kawasaki Z H2 or a Yamaha MT-10, it lacks madness. But that's precisely the point. This BMW R 1250 R review confirms what BMW R 1250 R forums have been saying for years: the Boxer is a safe bet, an engine whose reliability and character never go out of style. Not the most exciting in the segment, but probably the one you'll still be riding ten years from now.
