Overview
When BMW decided to bump its venerable flat-twin from 1170 to 1254 cc, nobody expected a revolution. And yet, the 2020 BMW R 1250 R marks a real turning point for the Bavarian roadster. The secret comes down to one word: ShiftCam. This variable valve timing system, which switches between two intake cam profiles, transforms the Boxer's character. The 136 horsepower at 7,750 rpm is one thing. The 143 Nm of torque available from just 6,250 rpm is another, far more meaningful at the handlebars. In practice, the engine pulls hard and early, with a usable power band that would put some four-cylinders to shame. Up against a Ducati Monster 1200 or a Triumph Speed Triple, the 2020 BMW R 1250 R doesn't play the raw sportiness card. It prefers quiet efficiency, generous torque that effortlessly picks up speed on corner exits.

This philosophy is nothing new. The lineage traces back to the R 1100 R of 1994, the first modern roadster with a four-valve Boxer. Since then, each generation has refined the concept without betraying it. The BMW R 1250 R spec sheet confirms this continuity: 239 kg wet, 820 mm seat height, 18-liter tank providing decent range thanks to a restrained fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km. The two-piece tubular steel frame, with the engine as a stressed member, carries over the 1200's architecture with its 45 mm inverted fork adopted in 2015 to replace the aging Telelever. The shaft-driven Paralever swingarm remains on duty, as do the four-piston Brembo radial calipers on 320 mm discs. Nothing spectacular on paper, but a coherent and proven package.
Where this 2020 model year pulls ahead is in electronics. As standard, the machine comes with ASC traction control, Hill Start Control, and ABS. Those who want to go further can opt for the Dynamic package, which adds Pro modes (Dynamic and configurable Dynamic Pro), DTC traction control, ABS Pro cornering braking, and MSR engine brake control. A quickshifter, sport screen, and full LED lighting complete the option. The 6.5-inch color TFT dashboard, called Connectivity, is now standard. Paired with a smartphone, it enables navigation, music management, and phone calls. Purists will grumble; touring riders will appreciate it on long hauls. As an option, the ESA Next Generation semi-active suspension adjusts damping in real time and automatically adapts to load. A compelling argument for those who ride two-up or with luggage.

In terms of positioning, the BMW R 1250 R starts at 15,100 euros for the base version. That's a substantial entry price, which the Exclusive and HP trims push even higher. The HP version, with its Motorsport livery, black wheels, and stainless steel belly pan, remains the most desirable. The BMW R 1250 R accessories catalog and the Option 719 line allow riders to customize the machine to their taste, but the bill can escalate quickly. A point worth watching for those eyeing a used BMW R 1250 R: well-equipped examples hold strong resale values on the second-hand market, whether in the 2019, 2021, or 2022 version.

Who is this machine for? Not beginners, despite its accommodating nature. The weight and displacement demand a minimum of experience. It targets the mature rider, the one who has traded lap-time dreams for the pleasure of covering miles. A single BMW R 1250 R test ride is all it takes to understand: the variable valve timing Boxer delivers a smoothness that few competitors can match. The Yamaha MT-10 hits harder, the Kawasaki Z H2 blows more violently, but none delivers this blend of comfort, torque, and mechanical serenity. The R 1250 R is neither the fastest nor the lightest, with its 200 km/h top speed. It is simply the one that makes you want to keep riding, long after the thrill-seeking has faded.
