Overview

Who still remembers the BMW R 1150 RS? Overshadowed by the RT, undisputed queen of Bavarian grand touring, the RS always played second fiddle. Yet it was the one that debuted the technological trio of Telelever, Paralever, and four-valve flat-twin. A pioneer, in a way, that Munich had the good sense to evolve before pulling the curtain. Produced from 2001 to 2005, this sport touring motorcycle deserves a closer look, especially when you come across one today on the used market at prices that have become very affordable.

Beneath the full fairing, fitted as standard on this generation, the 1130 cc boxer twin produces 95 hp at 7,250 rpm and, more importantly, 100 Nm of torque from just 5,500 rpm. It's no powerhouse, but the BMW R 1150 RS spec sheet tells a story beyond raw power. The engine's linearity, its ability to pull without flinching on a whiff of throttle — that's its true talent. For a road test of the BMW R 1150 RS, the verdict is clear. This machine targets the experienced rider, the long-distance tourer who values comfort and efficiency over outright sportiness. Capable of reaching a 220 km/h top speed, it prefers cruising at 140 in sixth gear with a restrained fuel consumption of 4.2 l/100 km, meaning over 500 km of range thanks to the 22-litre tank. Up against a livelier Honda VFR 800 or a more characterful Triumph Sprint ST, the BMW R 1150 RS plays the serenity card. It will never give you thrills, but it will never let you down either. The verdict on the BMW R 1150 RS boils down to this: a tourer disguised as a sport touring bike, reliable as clockwork, a touch bland in its responses but devastatingly effective over the long haul. Priced at €12,650 in 2005, significantly less than the RT of the era, it represents a rational choice today on the used market for anyone seeking a Bavarian GT without breaking the bank. Provided you accept its gentleman farmer temperament rather than that of a weekend racer.
