Overview
Who still remembers the BMW R 1150 RS? Overshadowed by the RT, undisputed queen of Bavarian grand touring, the RS always played second fiddle. Yet it was the one that debuted the technological trio of Telelever, Paralever, and four-valve flat-twin. A pioneer, in a way, that Munich had the good sense to evolve before pulling the curtain. Produced from 2001 to 2005, this sport touring motorcycle deserves a closer look, especially when you come across one today on the used market at prices that have become very affordable.

Beneath the full fairing, fitted as standard on this generation, the 1130 cc boxer twin produces 95 hp at 7,250 rpm and, more importantly, 100 Nm of torque from just 5,500 rpm. It's no powerhouse, but the BMW R 1150 RS spec sheet tells a story beyond raw power. The engine's linearity, its ability to pull without flinching on a whiff of throttle — that's its true talent. The six-speed gearbox and shaft drive reinforce this impression of mechanicals designed to last and to devour miles. On the other hand, the character remains understated, almost too polished. You sometimes wish this boxer would bare its teeth, rumble a little louder through the revs. And then there's the snatchy throttle response, the somewhat erratic fueling that irritates the passenger as much as the rider. A well-known flaw on forums dedicated to the BMW R 1150 RS, rarely resolved for good.
On the chassis side, the running gear displays remarkable composure. The three-section composite frame uses the engine as a stressed member, an architectural choice that gives the whole package a reassuring rigidity. At 246 kg wet, the RS is no lightweight, but it fades from consciousness once underway. The front Telelever eliminates dive under braking, while the rear Paralever maintains ride height under acceleration. The result is near-unflappable stability on the motorway as much as on twisting back roads. The dual front and rear discs with ABS deliver powerful braking, though the lever feel takes some getting used to for anyone coming from a Japanese bike. The three-position adjustable seat, set at 790 mm in its lowest configuration, and the knob-adjustable screen reflect the care given to ergonomics. BMW already knew how to adapt the motorcycle to the rider rather than the other way around.
For a road test of the BMW R 1150 RS, the verdict is clear. This machine targets the experienced rider, the long-distance tourer who values comfort and efficiency over outright sportiness. Capable of reaching a 220 km/h top speed, it prefers cruising at 140 in sixth gear with a restrained fuel consumption of 4.2 l/100 km, meaning over 500 km of range thanks to the 22-litre tank. Up against a livelier Honda VFR 800 or a more characterful Triumph Sprint ST, the BMW R 1150 RS plays the serenity card. It will never give you thrills, but it will never let you down either. The verdict on the BMW R 1150 RS boils down to this: a tourer disguised as a sport touring bike, reliable as clockwork, a touch bland in its responses but devastatingly effective over the long haul. Priced at €12,650 in 2005, significantly less than the RT of the era, it represents a rational choice today on the used market for anyone seeking a Bavarian GT without breaking the bank. Provided you accept its gentleman farmer temperament rather than that of a weekend racer.
