Overview
When looking at the mid-size trail landscape in 2024, it’s clear that Munich had no choice. The Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, the Ducati DesertX with its 937 cm3 engine, the KTM 890 Adventure that exudes enduro at every frame spacer: the competition has raised the bar, and the BMW F 900 GS had to do the same.

The Munich response begins with a visual impact. The previous 850 had a well-behaved, versatile trail look, with that characteristic beak and a silhouette that smelled of roads and family weekends. The new generation breaks with this comfortable past: short nose, raised riding position, compact and centered silhouette. It evokes African rallies more than highway cruising. This aesthetic repositioning is accompanied by a redesigned ergonomics for standing riding, with a handlebar raised by 15 mm, footpegs lowered by 20 mm in an enduro format, and a redesigned tank. Riders who like trails will be in their element.
But the real transformation takes place beneath the fairings. The inline twin, which has been eyeing the 895 cm3 engines of the F 900 R and F 900 XR for years, finally inherits this bore increased to 86 mm. Result: 105 horsepower at 8,500 rpm, 10 more than the previous generation, and a torque of 93.2 Nm at 6,750 rpm. The power climbs into the top of the category, while the torque curve gains regularity across the entire operating range. This is where the BMW F 900 GS 2024 scores points against a lighter but less powerful Aprilia Tuareg 660, or against a Yamaha Ténéré 700 that remains under 75 hp. The downside is the loss of A2 compatibility. New license holders will need to turn to a specific version or explore the BMW F 900 GS Adventure if their travel plans are to be realized on two wheels.
The other major project is weight. Fourteen kilograms lost between the two generations is the kind of figure that isn't achieved with a simple diet. BMW played on all fronts: a 4.5 kg lighter plastic tank, a redesigned rear frame to save 2.4 kg, an aluminum side stand, a lighter battery, a reworked swingarm. And especially an Akrapovic exhaust fitted as standard, which boasts a remarkable finish while weighing 1.7 kg less than the previous pot. The trail now weighs 219 kg fully fueled. It’s not yet the lightest in the segment, the Ténéré 700 remaining under 200 kg, but the gap has narrowed considerably.

The chassis also benefits from a serious evolution. The 43 mm Showa inverted fork, now fully adjustable, replaces a unit that was too stiff in the eyes of demanding riders. The travel remains generous with 230 mm at the front and 215 mm at the rear, which places the BMW F 900 GS among the best equipped in the segment in terms of suspension. The 21/17 wheels remain the reference measurements for off-road riding, and the 305 mm discs at the front ensure serene braking, even if the double-piston calipers seem conventional compared to the radial Brembo calipers of some competitors. On the electronics side, the 6.5-inch connectivity screen, the active cornering ABS Pro, and the traction control are part of the standard equipment, but the quickshifter, electronic suspension, and Enduro Pro modes remain optional. At 13,980 euros, the bill quickly climbs if you want to equip the trail for intensive off-road use.
Who is this trail for? For the rider who wants to tackle mountain roads in the morning and explore a forest path in the afternoon, without being a trail specialist. The BMW F 900 GS Adventure represents the most versatile version of the range for long trips; the base F 900 GS targets the regional rider who does not give up a real off-road capability. This is exactly the positioning needed to hold its own in a category where no one makes gifts.
