Overview
In the world of BMW touring motorcycles, it's difficult to make a name for yourself against the iconic R 1250 RT and the majestic K 1600 GT/GTL. But one can be more discreet, more playful, and more accessible by calling oneself the F 800 GT. Since 2017 and the Euro4 update, the little Behemme receives its first modifications since its appearance in 2013. In terms of looks, it will be very difficult to tell the difference from the previous version. Let's not waste time playing a guessing game and state: this chapter of the F 800 GT is recognizable by its metallized footrests on the fairing sides, a different exhaust tip, and modified instrument dials. The main modifications are at the engine level.
The twin itself does not change. Its 90 horsepower is still available, except that an adapted engine management system allows it to comply with regulations. The following will be of more interest. If you're going to tinker with electronics, you might as well do it seriously and bring the little GT in line with the range. The most touring-oriented F gains a ride-by-wire throttle, which allows for the implementation of Riding Modes. Now, you can choose a "Road" or "Rain" atmosphere for journeys and leisurely rides. "Road" prevails for everyday use, "Rain" will be more suitable in delicate conditions. Perhaps your desires will provoke a more vigorous wish!? In this case, a quick stop at the options box will offer you a "Dynamic" mode, revealing a more sporty riding style. The addition of Riding Modes has a slight impact on the on-board instrumentation: it is enriched with an engine anomaly warning light and the display of said Modes.
A judicious update for the F 800 GT, without touching its fundamentals, which should be recalled. Derived from and replacing the F 800 ST, the GT exudes a distinctly more dynamic impression, mainly thanks to its more generous and sportily designed fairing panels. With its larger bubble, the Behemme has gained in protection. Apart from the seat, the rear section remains that of the ST.
Its 798 cm3 twin-cylinder engine produces a maximum power of 90 hp at 8000 rpm and a lovely maximum torque of 8.8 mkg. A version restricted to 48 hp for young A2 license holders is also available. Under its fairing, you'll find an aluminum double-tube frame, a classic 43 mm fork, the singular location of the fuel filler cap, unfettered brake discs, standard ABS, belt drive, and a few small additions improving the efficiency of this 800 traveler. Compared to the ex-ST, there are lighter rims, a monobras swingarm extended by 50 mm for more stability, a reduced suspension height of 15 mm, and a more engaging ergonomics. With a handlebar raised by 20 mm, a seat dropping from 840 to 800 mm and footrests now 10 mm further forward and 10 mm lower, the rider will find a more relaxed riding position.
In addition to Riding Modes, this little GT benefits from some assistance normally reserved for more upscale machines. As an option, you can be assisted by the ASC, which is disconnectable, and/or ESA, the pilot suspension. Electronic Suspension Adjustment here allows you to electronically adjust the rear damper’s rebound according to 3 modes: comfort, normal, or sport.
This F 800 GT is clearly the youngest of Bavaria’s touring motorcycles and one of the few small GTs available on the market. Its maximum payload of 207 kilos allows you to carry many effects and luggage. This is where the range of accessories and options comes into play: 55-liter cases, a 28-liter top case, GPS Navigator IV, several types of seat, heated grips, Akrapovic silencer, etc., etc., and still all that. Detail that doesn't hurt: the consumption, announced particularly frugal.
